Ray Porter never fails and the material here captures interest from the very start. The pacing is spot-on. One minor niggle is how the puzzle solving that marks so much of the front half of the book (figuring out the who/what/why, and then how to communicate) gives way to a more traditional flow in the final stretch - the early innovations really are what make this a great experience, so it's a bit of shame that the momentum is not kept up, but I imagine it would be tricky to avoid feeling contrived.

I struggled with this one. The performance is great, but the key scenario and the approach taken to address it (becoming the origin for the conflict to-come) made absolutely no sense to me and broke my ability to suspend disbelief. I made it through to the end of this book, but it has reduced my enthusiasm to take on the subsequent books.

This is a surgical effort, hoisting the south on its own petard. Throughout, it supports the key points of its argument with examples that range from the disappointing to the depressing, but universally damning. It's difficult to see how this can still be the state of affairs and it's difficult not to become angry because of the mendacious behavior of the individuals and groups involved in expanding disenfranchisement and ignorance; keeping the poor poor and the rich richer.

Great performance, weaker story than the others

Ray Porter excels as ever, but the material is notably weaker than the previous 3 books. It's not as entertaining, compelling or capable of keeping the interest in the characters and situations. The set-up for the threads are decent, but the various events and conflicts suffer from pulled punches - there seems to have been an unfortunate avoidance of consequences across the board. As such, it's not really essential reading after the previous 3, which is where the heart of the writer seems to have been present.

Offers a view into origins of mental health issues

This was something of a surprise and left me thinking about it for weeks afterwards. I'd be tempted to suggest this be required reading as part of a general education system, just because it would probably help avoid people leaping to conclusions when discussing mental health and social issues - it's all too easy to suggest "pull yourself up by your shoe laces) without giving thought to the root cause. This is a valuable account and I'm extremely glad to have been exposed to it.

Not a vital book - addresses lingering questions

Not unique in this complaint; it seems to be Scalzi's style to lean very, very heavily on 'said' when portraying conversation. It's probably something easily overlooked (although editors should have spotted it) on the written page, but in audio form, it's quickly grating and then irritating. It's evident in all of Scalzi's material I've listened to, so it's a problem at the source rather than elsewhere. I'm just surprised it persists in all of his material.
Setting that aside, I liked the story, characters and presentation, so it's a minor grumble. It answered some of the lingering questions from book 1, but stands on its own fairly well. It's not quite as compelling as "Old Man's War", taking less time to build interest in the characters and situations, but it's enjoyable.

It's probably something easily overlooked (although editors should have spotted it) on the written page, but in audio form, it's quickly grating and then irritating. I'd have forgiven some refinement in the presentation to mitigate this in deference to the listener, but it is what it is. It's a trait evident in all of Scalzi's material I've listened to, so it's a problem at the source rather than elsewhere.
Setting that aside, I liked the story (although the twist is obvious from early-on - not sure if that was intentional), characters and presentation, so it's a minor grumble. I'm just surprised it persists in all of his material.

I don't remember what caused me to pick up this title, but I'm so glad I did. There's just something for me to enjoy in every part of this - from the presentation to the characters and the story as a whole, that led me to listen to the whole thing in a single sitting, just because I was so captured by it.

This is such a fascinating story, crisply presented. The way the history is connected together to carry the reader (listener) from the start to the current day is to be admired. It doesn't go into the technical detail of what was involved, which might be expected, largely focusing on the politics, personalities and events, but it can be frustrating to be teased (how were things compromised, how were certain devices able to capture information). It's really, though, my only wish - to have seen a bit more under the covers of the technical aspects.
