Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

A fun read of fantasy and feminism
Revisado: 03-06-22
I loved the ideas introduced in this book that tie in witchy story lore. BUT, it is close to being even more with some careful development of characters and plot. The supporting characters and sometimes the story felt forced in places and a little heavy handed in others. This is the second Harrow book I have read and I enjoy her imagination and how she weaves the fantastical into seemingly ordinary societies. She is adept at describing characters and societies impacted by oppression and the way that the oppressed can use their hard won grit and skills to fight real and personal demons.

Historia
Jesus commands us to love our neighbors. So why are so many Christians taught to fear their neighbors? The American church is known as a people who are afraid, who have been nurtured through fear into hatred, and who have moved from hatred to violence - or at least to neglect. This fear, too often lived out boldly in the name of Jesus, is a false religion.

Catherine McNiel ties it all together.

Ms. McNiel does an excellent job of putting biblical stories into historical context and relating them to modern life and practice. Her writing is thoughtful and thought-provoking while being accessible and easy to read. Ms. McNiel firmly, but gently reminds Christians to assist our fellow humans instead of giving in to our fears. Her book is well organized and provides many examples with strong references. This book helped me to improve my depth of understanding and to grow. I look forward to seeing more from this author.
