Could have been half as long
Revisado: 10-20-24
This story was very repetitive, full of the principle character's endless rumination on everything. It got old early on.

Not my favorite offering from one of my favorite authors, probably because the central character is more logical than emotional.

Historia
On a secluded bluff overlooking the ocean sits a Victorian house, lavender with gingerbread trim, a home that contains a century’s worth of secrets. By the time Jane Flanagan discovers the house as a teenager, it has long been abandoned. The place is an irresistible mystery to Jane. There are still clothes in the closets, marbles rolling across the floors, and dishes in the cupboards, even though no one has set foot there in decades. The house becomes a hideaway for Jane, a place to escape her volatile mother.

Too much of a good thing
Revisado: 08-04-24
There were wonderful historical background stories, but each might have been a book in itself. The constant loooong interruptions to the original modern story were somewhat annoying. The author pulls it together in the end, and every story was worth telling. I learned a lot. But there were many sighs of resignation on my part, as I realized the story I had become invested in was going to be put off for another long, seemingly unrelated story belonging to a yet another new character.

This is the best book I have read (listened to) all year. It’s a perfect balance of a character-driven as well as plot-driven historical story.

Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it's named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy. When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story.

I particularly liked the interjection of ghost stories to tell the back stories that made the living characters so intriguing.

Linda has lived in a quiet neighborhood since fleeing the dark events of her childhood in Wales. Now she sits in her kitchen, wondering if this is all there is: pushing the vacuum around and cooking fish sticks for dinner, a far cry from the glamorous lifestyle she sees in the glossy magazines coming through the mail slot addressed to the previous occupant, Rebecca Finch.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Not for me
Revisado: 04-22-23
I identified with the central character, am fond of magical realism, and thought I would enjoy this. Unfortunately, I found it boring at times, often anxiety producing, and generally a bad read. I would have set it aside early on had it not been a book group pick.

Way too complicated.
Revisado: 02-08-23
It’s only in the last chapter that the question posed in the beginning gets answered. The rest of the book—while sometimes an engaging listen — just sends the reader round in circles, and seems to have little to do with the most important question. Seriously not worth it.

Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

Both the story and the narrator left me wishing I had not spent the time listening to the end.
Revisado: 01-07-23
I have read a number of depressing books over the past year or so, but this one takes the prize. Ng tries to leave the reader with the suggestion that if enough of humanity hears this story there is perhaps hope for the future. But there is little conviction in her voice.
