Historia
If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

This deserves to be listened to completely three times. Those who rate it negatively, appear annoyed by moments when discussions are not aligned with their beliefs. Well written, well read. Beware, much of the content is likely outside the average reader’s knowledge, yet the detail is splendid.

Historia
Almost all of us have sat in a math class, wondering when we'd ever need to know how to find the roots of a polynomial or graph imaginary numbers. And in one sense, we were right: If we needed to, we'd use a computer. But as Ian Stewart argues in What's the Use?, math isn't just about boring computations. Rather, it offers us new and profound insights into our world, allowing us to accomplish feats as significant as space exploration and organ donation.

Historia
We would like to believe we can know things for certain. We want to be able to figure out who will win an election, if the stock market will crash, or if a suspect definitely committed a crime. But the odds are not in our favor. Life is full of uncertainty - indeed, scientific advances indicate that the universe might be fundamentally inexact - and humans are terrible at guessing. When asked to predict the outcome of a chance event, we are almost always wrong.

A very fine book
Revisado: 05-09-20
I enjoyed this such that I listened to it from cover to cover 3 times. I should mention that I originally was surprised that some reviews were surprisingly negative, which gave me pause. Now it appears to me that those reviews reflect people uncomfortable with discussions touching on where belief or religious views conflict with math and science. So be it. This is an old conflict. More surprising were what appeared to be hard core Republican and devoted Trumpers miffed by descriptions of the dangers that lay ahead if we ignore warnings provided by climate scientists. So be forewarned, there are a few comments that may annoy the thin skinned, it’s my way or the highway types. Further, the rich textured writing and refreshing vocabulary, so well read would probably not interest the pumpkins anyway. Great book. Inspiring author. Well read.

Excellent Text as a Serious Introduction
Revisado: 08-23-19
Deep Learning with Python provides the required vocabulary, examples and overview to begin to understand how Python, Keras and TensorFlow are being used today to build predictive neural nets. I'm looking forward to François's followup text written for advanced programmers. The code examples are not read by the narrator, therefore the printed text is recommended as a support. A powerful way to retain this information is to read, then listen, then re-read, then re-listen to each chapter, following common guidelines for optimizing the interval between each visit. https://ncase.me/remember/ Part 2 "The Science of Spaced Repetition".

Think of a number between one and 10. No, hang on, let's make this interesting. Between zero and infinity. Even if you stick to the whole numbers, there are a lot to choose from - an infinite number in fact. Throw in decimal fractions, and infinity suddenly gets an awful lot bigger (is that even possible?). And then there are the negative numbers, the imaginary numbers, the irrational numbers like pi which never end. It literally never ends.

Very well recorded and wonderfully read by Mark Elstob, in my opinion. I would have preferred the book to be twice as long. So, perhaps they will provide us with Volume 2 in the near future.

Historia
Bertrand Russell wrote that mathematics can exalt "as surely as poetry". This is especially true of one equation: ei(pi) + 1 = 0, the brainchild of Leonhard Euler, the Mozart of mathematics. More than two centuries after Euler's death, it is still regarded as a conceptual diamond of unsurpassed beauty. Called Euler's identity, or God's equation, it includes just five numbers but represents an astonishing revelation of hidden connections.

Horrible recording
Revisado: 11-11-18
Sounds to me like those who recorded this, did not notice the resonance of the reader's voice that resulted from the terribly resonant room in which the speaker sat while it was recorded. Sounded like a small wooden box or casket. I would expect better recording quality from middle-school students.
Listening to this annoying recording with headphones is painful to anyone accustomed to decently recorded speech. The room should not be audible; we should not hear the table on which the reader sets their notes; the compression on the voice should not exceed 3 dB; distance from the microphone to the face of the reader should be between 20 cm and 30 cm. A large-capsule static microphone with a high quality mic pre-amp should be used with minimal eq. All of these recommendations are rudimentary guidelines in professional audio engineering practice. Therefore, I would recommend that Audible screen the quality of the product they offer, and filter out mediocre work, or in this case low quality recordings. The reader was Ok, though at times, a bit monotonic, a bit long winded lacking a keen sense of pace and dynamic. Pronunciation errors could have been edited out. The story is wonderful in my opinion, so I would easily purchase this again and recommend it to others if someone would re-record the book in a good recording environment, and an audio engineer with an understanding of high-quality speech recording. I've listened to a dozen Audible books with audio quality ranging from fair to excellent. So it is with great disappointment to have to suffer through hours of low-grade audio.
