Historia
Lucinda Williams’s rise to fame was anything but easy. Raised in a working-class family in the Deep South, she moved from town to town each time her father—a poet, a textbook salesman, a professor, a lover of parties—got a new job, totaling twelve different places by the time she was eighteen. Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. But she was also born a fighter, and she would develop a voice that has captivated millions.

So disappointing
Revisado: 07-31-23
She stands up for her own work. In this case she must have ignored advice to have someone else narrate. I imagine if someone tried to coach her if this effort she probably told them to f-off. Did she even have an editor to guide her? After listening to her book it will probably be a decade or more before I can listen to her music without cringing.

So important
Revisado: 06-21-23
I found this book so informative and motivating. I understand the main themes after listening to this audio book but will revisit it as hard copy where it is easy to stop, reread, and make notes.

Historia
When farmer Harold wakes to find his wife dead beside him in bed and snow threatening to crush the last life from his dwindling farm, he takes drastic steps toward a fresh start. Set in a world of stark wintry beauty, Forty Acres Deep is the brief, unrelenting tale of one person's attempt to make sense of a world he no longer recognizes while pitilessly calling himself into account. Seamed with grim humor and earthy revelations, it is an unforgiving story...and yet leaves open the idea that we might surrender to hope.

Unexpected
Revisado: 03-15-23
Michael Perry’s works are usually filled with bits of often self effacing humor. Not so with this dark story of a man feeling alone, isolated, and regretful. Perry’s skillful turn of phrase portrays the downward path of despair powerfully. An important read.

A riveting narrative about the biggest earthquake in North American recorded history - the 1964 Alaska earthquake that demolished the city of Valdez and swept away the island village of Chenega - and the geologist who hunted for clues to explain how and why it took place.

Pacific NW readers take notice
Revisado: 02-04-23
This book is a good blend of personal stories and science. It is estimated that another quake of this size in Alaska is 600 to 800 years away. On the Oregon and Washington coasts a big quakes has happened every 3 to 4 hundred years. The last one was 350 years ago.

Historia
On September 1, 2004, three middle-aged buddies set out on one of the last geographic challenges never before attempted in North America: to hike the Comb Ridge in one continuous push. The Comb is an upthrust ridge of sandstone-virtually a mini-mountain range-that stretches almost unbroken for a hundred miles from just east of Kayenta, Arizona, to some ten miles west of Blanding, Utah. To hike the Comb is to run a gauntlet of up-and-down severities, with the precipice lurking on one hand, the fiendishly convoluted bedrock slab on the other-always at a sideways, ankle-wrenching pitch.

Roberts never disappoints
Revisado: 05-15-22
David Roberts does a wonderful job of informing us about geology, history, archeology, and outdoor challenges. What makes his works special is that whatever you may learn of the topics in this book you also learn about David Roberts. His style is personal. He shares a host of facts but also his feelings about this adventure and issues connected to it.
