Historia
A few minutes ago, Meghan Moretti's biggest concern was getting the kids' athletic clothes washed in time for practice this evening. Now, it seems that Earth has been forced into participating in some high-stakes intergalactic reality television. All electrical wiring has been slagged, and most combustibles neutralized. Some kind of evil space rodents are appearing on the front lawn, too.

Could have been a 5 with a little less swearing
Revisado: 03-14-25
I really enjoyed the story and Laurie did a phenomenal job on the narration, that said I would have given it 5 stars if Erin would have had even less swearing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like some stories that forget there are other words than f***, its just that I really just don't understand the need for having f-bombs in a story more than once, and then only if the situation really demands it. There wasn't a lot of swearing but just enough to make me say "really? Was that needed to make the story flow or be better in any way"?
Other than that, the overall story was well written, had humor and was thought provoking at times. Laurie did great with the different voices and it helped the story move along because you didn't have to figure out who she was talking for. I really enjoyed the points and the fact that there really aren't stats per se', just Novelty, Points and Money. Combine those with the abilities you can get and how they must have synergy with each other to get better, just made it even more interesting. This is as close to LitRPG as you can get without being in a game setting with all those rules and stats to deal with.
I will continue with the next book just because it was so well written and performed. Here is to hoping Erin tamps down a little more on the swearing (fingers crossed).

Historia
I don’t know who I am. I only know what I need to be. I awoke in a tomb. I had nothing but a big sword and uncertain memories from uncertain lives. I was a great warrior who wandered this land before being killed by an ageless tyrant wizard-king. I was a warrior of a very different sort, who lived in a city of steel and glass.

Mid-story review: OK, but annoying at times
Revisado: 02-11-25
I have only gotten through book one and am about a third of the way through book 2 so I will likely update this. The story is OK (OK to good, but definitely not great). I don't care if there are sex scenes in books but it seemed like Michael Dalton devoted entire chapters to sex, and he didn't even change it up much. You can only hear about how virile and sexually talented he is so many times before it becomes annoying repetitive. It also seems that the only type of female that finds him attractive are virgins (whatever, I guess he is the author and likes virgins so that is what we get). That said the rest of the story was good. The story line is fun and the MC seems to gain knowledge as he goes. The worst part was the way Byron Ormond would pause sometimes for extended periods in the middle of the story, but would read straight through the chapter headings like it was just another sentence (something like this... "All I could do was sleep until the following morning, chapter six, I awoke to find I was not alone"). But then in the middle of the story he would just pause again. I don't get it.
Also I know everyone has preferences on what voices sound good to them, but it seemed Byron Ormond's MC's voice just grated on my nerves. He did very good on the other character's voices but the MC just sounded wimpy and kind of whinny. Kat Riley did a good job on the females voices.
As I said I am only about a third of the way through book two and the story has kept my attention well enough for me to continue, so I will update this when I finish the rest of the omnibus.

Why does every other word have to be an F-bomb
Revisado: 01-30-25
I don't get it. Why do authors feel the need to fill their books with cuss words? The premise of the story was great, the narrator was amazing and this story had a lot of potential. It failed mostly because they just had to add tons of cuss words. Do authors need language lessons? Maybe they should read other books to see how versatile the English language can be if used correctly. That said, using 1/10 of the language this book would have probably been great. As it is, I couldn't give it that high of a rating if not for Stephanie doing such a great job with it.

I struggled every day, looking to put something on the table, but it was my life, and no one had a right to take it. Especially not Eris Lanyer, lord of the city, the very same who was supposed to keep people such as myself safe! The nobleman killed me without a second thought for the sole purpose of testing the blade he had just acquired! So here I am, burning with such a rage at this flagrant lack of justice. My hate is so immense that I'm unable to pass to the afterlife, and so I return as a Revenant.

Almost 5 hrs in and had to give up
Revisado: 01-15-25
Sorry, but this seems like it was written by a kid. It moves super fast and you can't even get to know the MC. The MC goes from being somewhat normal to crazed in seconds and although the author tries to explain why this happens it is very poorly done (other than to make the character not seem OP). The narrator, Daniel Wisniewski did a good job with what he had to work with and I would recommend him for other book reads.
All-in-all I couldn't finish this book, and I really tried. I usually love this type of genre but I cannot do this one anymore. Going to try to return it.

Just an enjoyable listen. Simple and fun
Revisado: 11-21-24
I was talked into listening to this book by my daughter who is a very avid reader. She recommended it based on what she knows I enjoy (which is more of a character build and world build, than any genre as I love anything from RPGLit to Sci-fi to historical fiction, and lots in-between). I have to say that her recommendation was well deserved. Not only was this story a fun and easy listen, the MC and all the supporting characters had depth. The world build left a little to be desired (not bad but not good), as it never really explained why it was the way it was, other than a short explanation in the beginning of the story, but for the most part the world was an interesting one.
Even if you are an adult (both mentally and/or physically), this book can be very enjoyable. No it doesn't delve deep into the subject matters that adult stories have but it skims them and thus lets you know the author wasn't afraid of heavy subjects just didn't need to have them in this particular story.
If you just need a good read/listen and don't want to have to be burdened with deep thought this book is ideal.

An enjoyable listen, just nice and easy
Revisado: 10-25-24
I can see why a lot of people didn't like this book, as there really isn't a lot happening. It is simply nice to listen to and is well narrated. The story is just the life of Roger the Butler and how he handles a dying wizards mansion. Everyday a little more happens but there isn't any real excitement, other than the not so nice niece (lots of people's reviews call her evil, but I believe she is just greedy and part of the screwed up world we live in). The characters are very enjoyable and relatable which is why the story, though slow, kept my full attention.
If you are looking for a listen that is light and easy and doesn't matter if you zone out for a second or two, then this is the perfect book. As I listened to the story I couldn't help but be completely drawn in and become part of Roger's life. I give credit to the idea the author uses for magic "Talent". He never fully explains it but hints at the possibilities of what can be done with magic.
All in all it is a well written and superbly narrated book. Wish there was more.

The world is filled with nightmares, and the looming threat of losing his soul stands between his goal and his reality, so it’s not like it will be too hard or anything. Hell should tremble. Frustrating. Could have been great.
Revisado: 10-21-24
This could have been a great story and the last half slowed down enough to start enjoying it. The problem is they would be doing something and in the next breath they characters were doing something else completely. It was all going so fast you couldn't really keep up with what was happening. The Narrator did a fine job but the story was missing any filler that would have rounded it out. As it stands this is like a young teen movie that added elements to give it an R rating to attract adults. The author just should have filled in the gaps of the story with some actual context. An extra hour or 2 with more information would have probably done the job.

Really a 4.5 but there isn't that option
Revisado: 09-18-24
I loved almost all of the story, except (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!) the almost cliched attack by the Moreland Headsman in the defense of Moreland City. Not sure why this was needed in the story but you knew it was going to happen as soon as the chance of a battle arose.
That said the rest of the book was both fun and full of details. I loved seeing the characters grow in their paths.

Though I don't believe this story will be everyone's cup of tea, just give it a little bit of time and you will be hooked. If you like watching characters actually develop within the story, then this is a great story to see it happen.
I love the detail of how he gets the information he wants to pass on, but understand how some might think this bogs the story down. I personally love "seeing how other people think".
Can't wait to listen to the next one.
