Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

The most Dickens-like book I’ve read in a long time
Revisado: 01-07-23
What a lovely Christmas story written in the style of Charles Dickens. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Historia
Abandoned by her parents, Georgiana Ellers is spending the summer with her stodgy aunt and uncle at their home in the English countryside. At a particularly dull party, she meets the enigmatic Frances Campbell, a wealthy member of the in-crowd who delights Georgiana with her disregard for so-called “polite society”. Lonely and vulnerable, Georgiana quickly falls in with Frances and her wealthy, wild, and deeply improper friends, who introduce her to the upper echelons of Regency aristocracy, and a world of drunken debauchery, frivolous spending, and mysterious young men.

DNF I just couldn't
Revisado: 01-02-23
I just couldn't keep listening. I'm usually better at holding out to the end of a book if I am going to give it a negative review but 3.5 hours was all I could take. Way too sorority mean girl. I feel like I could write paragraphs about how I was disappointed with content and the focus of this book, but just like the book, I would be all over the place. I feel like the author just put Jane Austen's name on it to sell copies. If it were to be a historical fiction, it would have been much better placed in the 1960's.
This is exactly why I love Audible"s return policy. Thank you Audible!

Painful! Buy a printed copy.
Revisado: 11-08-17
I gave the story 5 stars because it seems so well-written I will be purchasing a paper copy. The narration was so terrible it hurt. I always check the tone and accent of the narrator before I purchase a book, and thought Ryan sounded great. He reads SO SLOW and takes like 5 second breaks between EVERY SINGLE PHRASE. Did Not Finish? Try 'Hardly Got Started'!

What happened to having a plot?

It was like the editor cut out all the details that make a story and left the trampy sex.

Just Part One
Revisado: 10-07-16
This is one of those books that you wish had been released together with its sequel. It was a creative and detailed slow start. Oddly, I like those ones because I'm in for the 'long haul' listen. With the amount of creativity showing in the world Merlino is introducing to us, it must be given enough time to define the very different and very incredible alternate universe. This gives me flashbacks to The Fellowship of the Ring mostly because it's just the main characters getting to know each other and an introduction to the players and a feel for the story. It is not "the story", it is the beginning of the story.
I know book lengths are limited - especially for first books but I found myself at the end saying, "It's over? It just started..." I will surely listen to the next one, but I would say a lot rides on the quality of the next story, its going to have to hit the ground running after so much groundwork has been laid.
I love the characters, the ideas behind them, their source of power in all aspects and the world they live in. The one drawback to the book was that I didn't feel like it was well-edited. There were scenes that seemed to be in the wrong place, or backstory information missing during an event that would have added clarity to the event, but wasn't given to you until later, with no obvious reason for it to be withheld. Some scenes roll into others well, and some have no flow, but just jump forward (or sideways) without giving the reader a chance to re-orient. By the way, I bought this book because I like the narrator, couldn't have chosen a better one for Jack of Souls. And the laugh-out-loud moments are by far five stars.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the story, because I so love a good story.

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly - so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don't get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

Love her but...
Revisado: 02-10-15
I love Rosalyn Landor. She's one of the narrators of which I choose books because she is reading them. But wow, she must have been having a bad day. This was terrible. The story was slow with out of place scenes included for shock factor. Naaahhh.
