Historia
Christians today are hungry for authentic spiritual experiences, yet all too often they don't have the knowledge of or relationship with the Holy Spirit that is the key to a fully alive spirituality. In The Familiar Stranger, pastor and author Tyler Staton draws on Scripture, tradition, and spiritual practices to help you step into a genuine relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Beautiful and Practical
Revisado: 01-31-25
Tyler provides great insight for those of us who grew up without a good model for understanding and embracing the Holy Spirit. He is a wonderful example of how to suffer well and rejoice in our sufferings, and that really comes through in his writing. I am encouraged and inspired to see someone enduring many trials and being formed by them (rather than being defined by them) for God’s glory.

Historia
Moby-Dick as Philosophy is at base a chapter-by-chapter commentary on Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. The commentary form of the audiobook subserves a higher end, the presentation of an ideal of the type "philosopher". Superimposing portraits of Plato, Melville, and Nietzsche - the thinkers themselves, their ideas, and their lives - it generates a composite image from the overlaying and interblending of figures. At a higher level still, the audiobook is a meditation on the nature of philosophy and its relation to wisdom and the relation of creative artistry to both.

Very Good
Revisado: 01-27-25
Excellent analysis of the great American novel. My only critiques are that the book does not consider other interpretations of Moby Dick and works a little too hard at times to apply the philosophies written about to the individual chapter being discussed.

Historia
Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion—most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become.

The last 25% is Great
Revisado: 09-28-24
Good information, but a bit dated at this point (I’m writing this in 2024). The last 25% of the book is filled with great rules for eating and choosing what to eat. I didn’t love Brick’s narration and the overall tone of the book is very negative, to the point where it takes away from the overall message.

Historia
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

It was good. I was hoping for more in-depth information on Garfield. Heavy focus on the science of the time. Paul Michael is the best narrator.

Historia
From trendy restaurants to city grids, to TikTok and Netflix feeds the world round, algorithmic recommendations dictate our experiences and choices. The algorithm is present in the familiar neon signs and exposed brick of Internet cafes, be it in Nairobi or Portland, and the skeletal, modern furniture of Airbnbs in cities big and small. Over the last decade, this network of mathematically determined decisions has taken over, almost unnoticed—informing the songs we listen to, the friends with whom we stay in touch—as we’ve grown increasingly accustomed to our insipid new normal.

Historia
Our current definition of “productivity” is broken. It pushes us to treat busyness as a proxy for useful effort, leading to impossibly lengthy task lists and ceaseless meetings. We’re overwhelmed by all we have to do and on the edge of burnout, left to decide between giving into soul-sapping hustle culture or rejecting ambition altogether. But are these really our only choices?

Should have been an article
Revisado: 03-07-24
I’m a fan of Newport, but this is not his best effort. Newport takes a survey of 700 people and uses that as his primary source for the book. He uses anecdotal evidence to make broad claims. The advice given in the book is obvious. The information could easily be condensed to an article.

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

One of the best diet books
Revisado: 02-02-24
It’s a fantastic book. Highly readable and doesn’t take an unrealistic approach. The author frequently makes comments like “this doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach,” and “just eat as much good stuff as you can.” My one critique is that he doesn’t highlight any positive impacts of meat. It’s obvious there are lots of great results from eating a plant-based diet, but he comes across as a a little biased by ignoring any positive impacts of meat.

Historia
Over the course of his seemingly irreproachable life, Magnus Pym has been all things to all people: a devoted family man, a trusted colleague, a loyal friend - and the perfect spy. But in the wake of his estranged father's death, Magnus vanishes, and the British Secret Service is up in arms. Is it grief, or is the reason for his disappearance more sinister? And who is the mysterious man with the sad moustache who also seems to be looking for Magnus? In A Perfect Spy, John le Carré has crafted one of his crowning masterpieces.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 01-26-24
This is the first le Carré book I’ve read, so I didn’t know what to expect. The book more than exceeded expectations. The narration is excellent. The plot is complex and deep. The writing is fantastic. The beginning is a little difficult to follow with the perspective shifts and jumping back and forth in time, but you catch on quickly. I highly recommend.

Practical Guide to Contemplative Prayer
Revisado: 01-19-24
Keating gets into the details of contemplative prayer. It’s very practical, down to describing what thoughts you may have positive or negative. Would recommend to anyone considering trying the practice or to those who have dabbled and would like to go further.
