Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

The narration.
Revisado: 10-13-24
The language pummeled me and the protagonists bad luck got a little heavy-handed. Still, really made me think twice before making a joke about Appalachians.

Waaaaaay too long.
Revisado: 01-30-23
The narrator is brilliant and the main reason I stuck with it. As far as the story...the only thing the protagonist didn't do was hang from an airplane wing shooting the wings off a humming bird. Way over the top. The romantic scenes were laughable.

Historia
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

Necessary.
Revisado: 10-12-22
Asside from the whispered sing song delivery of the narrator, this story is necessary for anyone interested in history. I vaguely remember the news reports so this was an eye opener. Well done.

Historia
A breakaway best seller since its first printing, All Souls takes us deep into Michael Patrick MacDonald's Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. Rocked by Whitey Bulger's crime schemes and busing riots, MacDonald's Southie is populated by sharply hewn characters like his Ma, a mini-skirted, accordion-playing single mother who endures the deaths of four of her eleven children.

I am so glad the writer did the narration. It makes it so much more compelling. I typically hate the swearing, but having lived in Boston during the 60's this is the way it was in the South End.
What a story! I admire the author and those who lived the injustices. I especially admire Helen.

Historia
Ariel Price wakes up in Lisbon, alone. Her husband is gone—no warning, no note, not answering his phone. Something is wrong. She starts with hotel security, then the police, then the American embassy, at each confronting questions she can’t fully answer: What exactly is John doing in Lisbon? Why would he drag her along on his business trip? Who would want to harm him? And why does Ariel know so little about her new—much younger—husband?

It never ended bacause it never began. Basically a teenager's diary. Day to day minutae that went nowhere. No plot. I kept waiting for something to happen...it never did.
