Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

OMG so good. What if Hidden Figures met Jane Eyre?
Revisado: 09-16-24
This is that story.
Our protagonist is a prodigy. A girl who finished Stanford in her teens. A Phd. A Jew. A wife. A pilot. A veteran of WWII.
Meet those facts in 1952 with a race to leave our planet due to a meteor impact causing a global weather catastrophe.
It's as gripping and riveting as you could wish from a cowrite by Tom Clancy, Andy Weir, and Charlotte Bronte. Kowal pits the technology against the social norms and we are drawn in delightfully. Must read. Listen. And then do it again.

and you thought The Expanse was a big stage....
Revisado: 08-30-24
Wow. I'm a fan of SA Corey but this blew me away. Like their previous world building, this one takes you for a ride. a really big ride.
As an audiobook listener, Jefferson May brings you in, but occasionally his voice work didn't differentiate enough for me. Maybe I was distracted, so pay attention to who's on the page (as it were!)
And distracted listening is not recommended. You will miss things. if you fall asleep to Mays' delicious voice, best use a sleep timer or make note of where you were before the lights are off. I was mightily confused and restarted the book again.
I don't want to spoil this, it's so fresh and twisty.
Expect to really like Dafyd, and the hero's journey he's thrust into. It's only beginning. Happy Reading!!
but hey, distracted reading is a great reason to relisten... so off for a second fun trip into space...<3

perfect use of an audiobook format
Revisado: 09-25-19
The background use of music woven into the story line is perfectly done. While the beginning is a bit slow and overly drawn out, I have high hopes for the finish.

Hilarious over the top a la Dirk Pitt
Revisado: 07-11-19
Witty with sly nods to current events, authors and memes. "Should of written scottish time travel romance" reference to Outlander and Diana Gabaldon, equal opportunity digs at both ends of the political spectrum, and insertion of the author himself as a character were moments that kept me giggling and awake during a late drive across the desert.

Historia
Taking place during the most critical period of our nation’s birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington’s character, but also illuminates the origins of America’s counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA. In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan.

Provisional review
Revisado: 01-08-19
I'm over an hour into the audio book. Excellent narration and a fascinating story. Descriptive, good narrative flow and engaging. Recommended for any interested in this time period.
Today is Jan 8 2019. The audiobook released this morning. I'm comparing and contrasting the descriptions of behavior with those of today's politicians. Very sobering.
Outlander fans will be engaged by the Washington -Tryon story.

Would you consider the audio edition of Seven Stones to Stand or Fall to be better than the print version?
Yes and no. Having not seen the print version, I can assume by what I listened to, that there are instances where seeing the print edition would be more helpful. One instance is a list of someone's diary entries - where seeing it as we would "normally" would probably allow the reader to grasp the information more easily. However, I enjoy the audio versions immensely. The voice actors are terrific at characterizations, and little things like hearing a fight, and the audible gasps, huffing, out of breath pauses certainly make the audio book quite enjoyable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Seven Stones to Stand or Fall?
Getting to know Minnie. The story of her travels to London and what ensues is entirely new material and much about a character that I've always wanted to know better.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. And there's a critical review of this audiobook that disparages the "woman with a raspy voice". Well, that's the author herself, and while Diana is not a professional voice actor, having her acerbic wit in the material she reads is very enjoyable.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Can't imagine this book in film as a stand alone. The stories enhance the Outlander universe.
Any additional comments?
Audible doesn't label its chapters. An annoying habit. I suggest the following bookmarks Labels for the readers' and listeners' convenience:
Chapter 1 Intro to book
Chapter 2 Custom of the Army
Chapter 6 A Space Within
Chapter 11 A Plague of Zombies
Chapter 15 A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows
Chapter 17 Virgins
Chapter 22 A Fugitive Green
Chapter 40 Besieged.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.
