An entertaining, unsettling and weirdly relatable horror novel. Full of creepy crawlies and real-world struggles. There were a few loose ends, but whose life doesn't have those? Loved it.

A genuinely creepy ghost story (or maybe possession story?), that explores the complexities of relationships, and the pain of loss and loneliness. The language is beautiful, and funny, and heartbreaking. And the narrator is spot on. I had to relisten to a couple sections because my mind wandered, but that's probably more about me than the book. I loved it.

Great narrators and sound design; great character development, suspenseful and original. Hope there are more by this team, and in this world.

I liked the protagonist, and the narrator was great. The author is good enough at building tension that I was willing to stick around and keep listening. But it became clear that the plot was built on story elements meant only to be red herrings. The story got more and more ridiculous, until the climax which makes absolutely no sense. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but there are things that happen to the human body that, even if you conveniently have amnesia, would be pretty hard to not notice.

90% penthouse forum. Recommend listening with headphones. Or you know, just skip it. Pretty ridiculous.

Interesting concept about ancient monsters meeting new technology, and I was lulled in by all the good reviews. But the monsters were revealed almost immediately, and the mythology behind them is vast and unwieldy (monsters can curse people with bad luck, or eat them, or turn them into monsters. Literally nothing they can't do except stop a YouTube video). It's not terrible, but it's not scary or thrilling or all that interesting. It probably would have benefitted from an editor and a professional narrator.

If you listen to audio books while you're cleaning or walking the dog, and your mind wanders, and you find yourself missing part of the story, this is a good choice. It's super contrived and formulaic, so you don't have to pay close attention. I'm not sure what all the five star reviews are about, but it's not a terrible book, and it's not a great book. It's just ok.

A Dark Coming-of-Age Story

Ronald Malfi understands the darkness and light of adolescence. When you're indestructible, and vulnerable to everything - your classmates, your family, curfews, bullies, and monsters real and imagined. Everything feels high stakes, and in this story, they are. If you're looking for a quick thrill, this probably isn't your thing. But the atmosphere of the early 90s is spot on, and the relationships between the characters feel real and poignant. The monster - The Piper - is plenty to keep you looking over your shoulder when you walk back to your car at night. My favorite narrators emote, but also stay above the story, and Eric G. Dove is one of the best.

This book - as far as I managed to get into it - is very well-written, with nuanced characters and strong atmosphere. The performance is pretty fantastic, too, apart from a spot or two where she seems to forget whose voice she should be using, which can be a little jarring. I stopped listening with about 4 and a half hours to go when it became clear that the focus of the book was shifting to explicit sexual content between a tween and a man pushing 30. I probably could have continued if it wasn't so graphic, but it was legitimately making me queasy.

There are many reviews saying the book is fodder for pedophiles, and it certainly seems possible it could be a vehicle for that. I don't think that was the author's intention - ugly is right there in the title, after all.
