Got more interesting in the second and third books
Revisado: 06-10-24
I didn't really care much for the first book because it was almost exclusively a "shoot the zombies" book. I know nothing about guns, military, or the police, and they don't really interest me when I'm reading. As the series went on, there was more explanation into the science of what was happening and a little less fighting.

SO good!! I listened to it on 1.5x speed and it made it much more exciting. LOTS of action and a fun zombie story. I really liked how stories wove together throughout the entire book.

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

Monologue after monologue about the same exact stuff!
Revisado: 12-22-23
This is basically a book about Michael Crichton's views on global warming, told through one of his fictional characters over and over again. (YES, we get it! You don't think global warming is a real phenomenon!) The book takes on a lecture-like quality sprinkled with little bits of dramatic action scenes in between. I hated every time they got on Morton's private jet because it meant another lecture from Kenner. Definitely not my favorite Crichton book.

At least it was free...

Probably would not have tried it if it wasn't free. It was something to listen to on my drive, but that's about it. Didn't particularly enjoy it, but it wasn't terrible.

Historia
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles (micro-robots) has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey.

Still my favorite Michael Crichton book!
Revisado: 07-13-23
I haven't read it since I was a kid, but this book is fantastic. The action starts immediately, so you're wondering what is up from the moment the book starts. As always, well-researched and well-thought-out, with just enough hand-waving to make it seem like it could happen. Especially as AI begins to emerge in our modern society, this is a phenomenally terrifying story and I loved every minute of it.

Historia
As smartphones, supercomputers, supercolliders, and AI propel us into an ever more unfamiliar future, How to Speak Science takes us on a rollicking historical tour of the greatest discoveries and ideas that make today's cutting-edge technologies possible. Wanting everyone to be able to "speak" science, YouTube science guru Bruce Benamran explains - as accessibly and wittily as in his acclaimed videos - the fundamental ideas of the physical world: matter, life, the solar system, light, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, special and general relativity, and much more.

Not what I expected but still good!
Revisado: 11-27-22
The title is a little misleading. Rather than a discussion of "how to speak science", the author just talks about science himself. Interesting stuff, but definitely not what I was expecting. Probably should have read the description.

Historia
Since Night of the Living Dead, zombies have been a frightening fixture on the pop-culture landscape, lumbering after hapless humans, slurping up brains and veins and whatever warm, fleshy matter they can clench in their rotting limbs. But what if they were real? What would happen if, tomorrow, corpses across the nation began springing up out of their graves and terrorizing the living? Employing hard science and solid police work - not to mention jaw-dropping (literally!) humor - Zombie CSU is the only guide available to staying alive and avoiding the undead.

Not as good as I expected
Revisado: 08-31-21
I was really excited by the description of this book, but I just couldn't really get into it. The content was interesting(ish), but it was punctuated by lots of random side-bars...presumably because the book is structured with lots of images and extras alongside the main narrative. I think it could have been structured differently as an audiobook to emphasize that the asides were completely separate from the rest of the book. Maybe put them in their own section at the end...

Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Exactly how I imagined it
Revisado: 02-14-21
I watched the show before I listened to this book. Honestly, if I wasn't warned in advance that the POINT is that magic is dull, tedious, and difficult, I think the somewhat monotonous/monotone reading might have come as surprise. But if you realize that, everything lines up really well with the show, and you realize how good the writing is, it's actually quite remarkable. Janet and Eliot are still my favorite characters, too.
