Historia
Kathryn Scanlan’s Kick the Latch vividly captures the arc of one woman’s life at the racetrack—the flat land and ramshackle backstretch; the bad feelings and friction; the winner’s circle and the racetrack bar; the fancy suits and fancy boots; and the “particular language” of “grooms, jockeys, trainers, racing secretaries, stewards, pony people, hotwalkers, everybody”—with economy and integrity. Whittled down with a singular artistry, Kick the Latch bangs out of the starting gate and carries the listener on a careening joyride around the inside track.

A short, quiet, beautiful book
Revisado: 12-21-22
I don’t have much interest in horses, and still don’t. But there’s so much to love - the bleeding heart of someone who isn’t built for the life they’ve chosen.

Historia
A mysterious plague ushers in an intergalactic war that ravages the galaxy for decades. A soldier and a pilot are tasked to deliver a package. A messenger and a refugee decide to work together on a dying alien planet. A love letter is lost that could be the key to a new future. A dark comedy about the messages we carry in our bones.

Sci-Fi allegory for the Sci-fi averse
Revisado: 03-07-20
Ms. Joelle’s screenplay hits on many of the insidious aspects of the political zeitgeist: racism, information gathering, meritocracy-as -loyalty-test, xenophobia, eugenics, and will-to -power. In a post-apocalyptic galaxy, Joelle is deftly optimistic about the power of honest apolitical dialogue - the sort that breeds sympathy among individuals that have fallen prey to agitprop. Joelle’s argument for human sympathy as savior, to her credit, never feels sentimental, and the performances of the voice-actors are to be commended....this warrants your listen, no matter whether sci-fi is or isn’t your thing (in my case).
