The narrator does a good job. Yes she makes all her speakers seem very old, but at least we know that those words are in quotation. Otherwise she would need to say “quote, end quote” which would be much worse. Anyone who loves the big book will enjoy this history, and I find myself excited to listen further for a richer understanding of the text.

This book is like having a dominatrix be your motivational coach. She believes responsible sex with whomever you want will make the world a better place. She explains how to be sexy and confident, in ways that is relevant to both men and women. There is no hedging, no qualifying, no guilt. This is all done with humor. The author reads in a direct, theatrical way. In an age in which everyone is so socially bland and afraid, this book is full of sound advice. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, and are not in a serious relationship, this could be a good book to listen to.

He writes about embracing the emotional (rather than intellectual) aspects of improv (and life). I enjoyed it. He has a great voice too.

It’s great! It’s Jerry reading his material. If you think you’ll like it, you will. His reading gets more like his standup voice as the book moves along. It’s especially good for people who write jokes.

I was doing 5 minute open mic sets several times a week before Covid. I even started an open mic at a bar close by. So everything Maria was saying was stuff I could relate to. I like her idea of doing anything for an hour, calling it comedy, and practicing that daily in any environment. Maria talks about how to handle feedback. One needs to both be resilient and protect oneself. She is always enthusiastic and supportive, but she also explains creative frustration in an extremely accurate way, like a torture scientist explaining her favorite custom made tools to someone strapped to a table. She recommends having some nice friends outside of comedy and having interests outside of comedy. Mostly though she's very funny. She is at the tip top of standups. This book goes into the category of books like The Artist's Way, Big Magic, The War of Art, and Why We Make Things. (She mentions these books in the audio, but I've read them too and I agree). And I'm tacking this on at the end, but it's a good listen for anyone with anxiety and depression, even if you don't do anything creative.

I have also watched this professor’s Greek Language course and in both he has a dry wit to match anyone on Saturday Night Live. Imagine Darrell Hammond as a Classics professor, and you have what he is like. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a joke a minute. He’s like Darrell Hammond actually teaching well. He is giving very thoughtful informative lectures which have a great deal of empathy for students. He loves the ancient world. I enjoy listening to him.

This book really showcases Allen's ability as a writer and performer. I listen to it as I go on walks and never once am I bored. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested, but especially to writers, filmakers, and comedians.

On William Hootkins and the White Whale

In case you didn't know, William Hootkins is Red Six "Porkins" from the scene in Star Wars when the X-Wing fighters attack the Death Star. He gets blown up because he doesn't pull up. He is also in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Batman and most importantly he one of the best narrators of all time. I have not listened to any of his other narrations, but I call him one of the best based on this one reading of Moby Dick. I love it. I don't think there are many equal performances - maybe Jeremy Irons for Lolita, or Stephen Fry for Sherlock Holmes. I also like William Hurt in The Sun Also Rises and John Rowe in Remembrance of Things Past. Rosamund Pike is good in Pride and Predjudice. Moby Dick the book is mysterious and gets under your skin. Its kind of like some other classics: at first you think, what's all the big fuss, but then you go hmmm, why can't I stop thinking about this, and then it becomes your favorite. I highly recommend this book.

Clear Explanation of How the Mind Works

Most books on Buddhism teach you how to drive; this book is like having Click and Clack lift the hood of the car and explain very clearly why the engine works. I think it may be one of the most helpful books I've ever read. The clarity with which emotions are explained is amazing. The author convinced me of the effectiveness of mindfulness. He is always careful to say where the science is uncertain or where the Buddhism is not grounded in science. I think I can now read other Buddhism texts, like the Suttas, with a framework for understanding that I did not have before. The author has a conversational, self-depreciating, and personal style of writing that I like. Narration is good.

This is the best overall purchase you can make on audible, considering the quality of the work, the quality of the narration, and the length, there's no better all-around audiobook.
