Compelling plot & characters
Revisado: 10-02-24
A compelling story highlighting the struggle of working class communities to maintain viability while seeking help from appointed officials and federal agencies. Suspense and murder mystery. Engaging yet flawed characters on a path of self destruction who also perpetuate natural disaster. Once again, Jim Prichett illustrates the tenacity of one man to seek truth, uplift family, and fight for environmental justice.

Murder mystery but unsolved murder? Who was the soft voice plotting the demise of Maddy? Maybe this is ongoing theme to be continued. Good narration. Interesting characters. Look forward to reading next installment.

Poignant Reality
Revisado: 04-26-24
So much focus on urban cities people often forget what is going on in rural communities. This portrayal captures intimate relationships, the complexities of family and extended family dynamics, and the intersection of religion, politics and corruption where you least expect. The over arching influences of race and power are so disturbingly real. If you don’t live in denial, you can relate. Great first novel. Descriptive and sophisticated. Engaging plot and characters. Great narration, convincing voices and emotions. Highly recommend!

Philmont Castle is a man who has it all: wealth, respect, and connections. Suspense
Revisado: 11-03-23
Tantalizing take on and reinvention of historical events. “Fictionalization” of familiar historical characters, who almost become relatable. The story poignantly uncovers the brutalities of war, the personalities of domestic unrest, and the unrelenting ego of power brokers. The protagonist is an unlikely superhero: graduating college with the goal of becoming a writer (in defiance of his parents), loving a woman who marries another man, seeking his missing sibling for almost two decades, uncovering a political plot to infiltrate American democracy, surviving multiple assassination attempts and torture, and on and on…! The audiobook is a long listen, but worth the time and energy. The story intensifies chapter to chapter. Stephen L. Carter is a talented writer. Great narration.

Historia
This cultural biography tells the enthralling story of the high-achieving Black elites who thrived in the nation's capital during Reconstruction. Daniel Murray (1851-1925), an assistant librarian at the Library of Congress, was a prominent member of this glorious class. Murray's life was reflective of those who were well-off at the time. This social circle included African American educators, ministers, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, US senators and representatives, and other government officials.

Exceptional Historical Review
Revisado: 10-20-23
The author documents Black history in America through the journey of Darryl and Anna Murray, their children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and colleagues. Ms. Dowling-Taylor takes a unique approach to blending historical fact with family dynamics, environment, and the political realities of colorism and white supremacy. This is an intimate insider story of lives lived with purpose and dedication to the “Beloved Community.” “The Original Black Elite” is a balanced perspective of the roles of Mr. & Mrs. Murray. Specifically, how her thoughtful pursuits and collaborations shaped public education, creating Kindergarten for Black/all children, and his relentless historical research and written documentation of Black life in America and the global contributions of Black people. Amazing historical facts. Should be required reading in high school civics classes.

Historia
When the body of reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her twenty-fifth birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. A tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. Yet Columbia grad student Lena—principled, headstrong, and allergic to the spotlight—knows that can’t be the case. Despite the bitter truth that the two hadn’t spoken in two years, they were half-sisters. Lena knew Desiree. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. Something is very wrong with the facts. So why is no one listening?

Contemporary Storyline
Revisado: 07-18-23
Complex characters and plot, illustrating the depth of family and extended family relationships. As in good mystery writing the reader cannot draw any conclusions until the last page, and the villain is not always most obvious. Excellent dialogue. Reality star, strong family of women, rich Black music executives, gatekeepers, neighborhood bodegas, Cadillac cars for hire, and police detectives, et.al., is updated for diverse readership making the characters, community lifestyle & neighborhood gentrification relatable. Suspenseful, Good narration (male voice needs improvement). Recommend author, looking forward to next audio book.

He’s not going to stop until the men in the photos are dead and buried. He’s already mown through five of them. The sixth poses a problem. Kian Grant, an ex-televangelist preacher with murky ties to the Boston underworld, knows something’s coming. Before Slater can even approach his suburban mansion, Grant is gone, fleeing south over the border to the mountain town of Durango. Slater knows what that means.

The good guys do good by eliminating the lives of evil people, who by their own admission, are beyond redemption. The women have been trained to be fighters and protectors. Glad the story describes the insights and shared intuition between characters, it’s like an unconditional transfer of understanding and trust.
