It felt like the best fan fiction but with OCs. The premise was interesting and the action was exciting.

Historia
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Very interesting. Obvious agenda. Still worth it.
Revisado: 03-28-25
The history section of this book was thought provoking. I did feel it lost a lot of impact in the second half due to increasingly visible bias of the author.

Not a full novel. Would recommend the series but not this.
Revisado: 12-12-24
Leading up to this book’s release I re-listened to all 14 mainline honorverse books and found them solid as before. The best space naval combat I’ve found anywhere, combined with strong writing, drama, politics and intrigue. Only dragged down by the author’s bizarre political biases and the most cringe relationship in any book/series I’ve ever finished (Harrington & Whitehaven).
With that background, this book was not worthy of being a full novel. It could have been reduced in length by 70% and been a novella in a set like the worlds of honor books. Most it’s runtime was direct retelling of scenes from previous books.

A classic in the making
Revisado: 05-29-24
I’ve been following the money guy for many years now and consider this the fully realized vision for future reference. It’s a combination of practical advice for realistic wealth building. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a path forward towards financial independence. It is not a specialized book for FIRE proponents or real estate nerds. Instead it is for the general audience and is excellent for those folks. Personally the most interesting insight I didn’t get from the podcast is that the reason to pay off the low interest debt isn’t just about order of operations. It’s also about the reduced value of compounding relative to security as you approach retirement.

Can’t understand why this doesn’t have 4.8 or 4.9 stars
Revisado: 05-01-24
This is a rock solid story. There are too few romances with characters who are flawed in interesting and believable ways. It’s also not afraid to engage with the bad decisions that were made in the past and the real and unavoidable consequences they have caused. The way it handles kids is particularly poignant in my opinion.

Historia
After decades of poising on the brink, the United States and China finally go to war when China invades the island of Taiwan. Deploying their most futuristic technologies in this grand strategic competition of the twenty-first century, the stakes could not be higher. Not only the future of the Taiwanese people but the fate of the world lies in the balance. In an era when humans no longer just use machines, but partner with them in all aspects of military operations, this fictional account views this future war through the eyes of the American, Chinese, and Taiwanese caught up in the maelstrom.

Interesting, but no “Red Storm Rising”
Revisado: 08-18-23
This is the first near future view on the Taiwan conflict that I’ve read and had some interesting projections of how space, cyber, and drone technology will integrate with war fighting.
However it fell short on 3 key aspects which prevent it from getting a top rating.
1 - The most influential events happened completely off-screen. The failed landings, the massive naval battle which set the Chinese behind on maintaining access to the island and the surprise fighter strike operation using he 6th-gen fighters would have made excellent centerpieces and I felt the book really suffered without them. Look to “the dance of the vampires” for a well-done example of a scene like that.
2 - While there were several POV characters who had names and backgrounds the author didn’t do enough to establish them and make us care about them. This meant that even when a character was injured or potentially killed I didn’t feel a significant amount of tension or emotional response.
3 - The characters didn’t have flaws or make mistakes. It felt like each character was the perfect person for their situation and really could have been replaced with anyone else in the same shoes. Captain Lee was the closest thing to a protagonist we got but even she was relatively poorly developed.
Given the interesting near future fiction approach to addressing current problems I’d be willing to give the author another chance but this book can only get 3-stars from me.

The romance is the worst part
Revisado: 08-16-23
I barely managed to finish this book and found myself fast-forwarding entire scenes because of how cringe the romance is in this book. The core storyline is solid and the space battles are interesting but the ham-fisted relationship drama may prevent me from buying the next in the series.

Historia
When Nareh Bedrossian’s non-Armenian boyfriend gets down on one knee and proposes to her in front of a room full of drunk San Francisco tech boys, she realizes it’s time to find someone who shares her idea of romance. Enter her mother: armed with plenty of mom-guilt and a spreadsheet of Armenian men, she convinces Nar to attend Explore Armenia, a month-long series of events in the city. But it’s not the mom-approved playboy doctor or the wealthy engineer who catch Nar’s eye—it’s Erebuni, a woman as immersed in the witchy arts as she is in preserving Armenian identity.

I truly felt seen by this author
Revisado: 02-09-23
I have read so many romances but I don’t think any has been so directly relatable. I’m not Armenian but I have been around Armenians for a long time and have walked many of the streets and beaches in this book, attended lectures at dwinelle, and felt the pull of mixed culture. The stress of career and family expectations mixed with negative self-talk and procrastination made perfect sources for drama.
Even though this book isn’t about me it really made me feel seen.
