A Classic Worth Revisiting
Revisado: 02-07-25
I enjoyed Graham Greene’s novels, having read several in college many years ago. Listening to them many years later brings equal delight. Our Man in Havana paints a sardonic perspective of the cold-war era. Recommend!

Familiar Themes New Narrative
Revisado: 02-04-25
Dick Francis books are a familiar favorite for me. I consume them regularly. The themes are familiar and comforting yet also compelling. I continue to delight in the various perspectives on horse racing that he reflects in his novels.

Historia
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Entertaining Story, But
Revisado: 10-31-24
In the end, just okay. Spoiler alert: surprise ending was more than a bit clunky and improbable. I’ve listened to a few other KL Slater books, but I remember them being more carefully constructed than this one.

Slamming the door on the hellscape of 1980s Belfast, Detective Inspector Sean Duffy hopes that the 1990s are going to be better for him and the people of Northern Ireland. As a Catholic cop in the mainly Protestant RUC he still has a target on his back, and with a steady girlfriend and a child the stakes couldn’t be higher. After handling a mercurial triple agent and surviving the riots and bombings and assassination attempts, all Duffy wants to do now is live. But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention.

Sean Duffy Series is Masterful
Revisado: 08-17-24
I’ve now completed the entire Sean Duffy series. Plot and characters are carefully interwoven throughout. Highly entertaining with the added plus of many, many cultural references. I wanted to google the ones that I did not know and couldn’t figure out in context! They aren’t critical to understanding the narrative, but the references add a lot to the listening experience. Kudos to Gerard Doyle’s narration. I will watch for other books that he performs.

His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

This novel was so wonderfully written that I consumed it and then hated for it to end. One of Ken Follett’s best in my estimation, but I’m a huge fan anyway.

Ana Montes had spent seventeen years spying for the Cubans. She had been raised in a patriotic Puerto Rican household: Her father, a psychiatrist, was a former colonel in the US Army. Her sister worked as a translator for the FBI and helped break up a ring of Cuban spies in Miami. Her brother was also a loyal FBI agent. Montes impressed her bosses but in secret spent her breaks memorizing top-secret documents before sending them to the Cuban government. Retired FBI agent Peter J. Lapp explains the clues that led their team to catch one of the United States’ most dangerous spies.

Dark Story, Dark Protagonist
Revisado: 03-11-24
Terrific novel with an exceedingly unlikely and vulnerable protagonist. As in other novels, McKinty weaves cultural and literary touchstones into the narrative as well as into the book’s structure, keeps the reader thinking beyond the storyline, a good thing!Narration is spot on except for the humorous portrayal of a cab driver—still entertaining , though, for that short bit, and the rest of the performance is wonderful. All-around bravo for Hidden River!
