At least 2/3 of this book is a day by day - sometimes minute by minute - account of the illnesses and passing of the authors adoptive parents, from a personal, religious and medical standpoint.

I wasn’t bored, exactly, but several times I did find myself wondering why I was still listening - my own parents have been gone for many years, and no question, for most of us, the passing of one’s parents is a profoundly sad event ,but this seemed more than a little a overdone. True, her mother died of cancer during the pandemic, which offered a bit of universality to the account, reminding us of the horrors of those years, but very little of this chronicle has anything to do with her being a Korean child who had been adopted by non-Asian parents. We can say this: surely no biological child ever mourned the death of parents more than did this adopted daughter.

I doubt I’ll listen to this one again, but…. It wasn’t a waste of time. Just a book of marginal interest, but one that was well narrated and reasonably short.

I have - never had - any thoughts of entering the field of paramedicine myself at all, but I loved this book! I really had no idea the training was as rigorous as it apparently is - it is indeed a mini-med school experience, accomplished not in years but in months. I appreciated the fact that Grange’s book is ruthlessly honest, not just about his lofty ambitions, but about his stumbles along the way. In many ways, the book reminded me of Dr. William Nolan’s classic, “The Making of A Surgeon” or even Scott Turow’s law school account, “One L”. Definitely a worthy memoir, fascinating to anyone interested in a “what it takes “ story. As I finished the book, I hated to have it end, I wanted to know what he went on to do, next. To my delight, there is such a book. “Wild Rescues” comes next - just downloaded it to enjoy next!

The last two hours of this book show what a really fine novel this could have been - Instead it turned out to be an entirely predictable, run of the mill, romance. It had such potential! The Hawaiian setting, the unusual work, the girls themselves, who they were, what brought them to this place at this time. And there should have been much much more about all of the white-knuckle situations they must have faced. Instead we got star crossed lovers ..... too bad. Maybe someone else will write a much more comprehensive book about the work that these young women did.

Great adventure story - I on,y wish there were a sequel, as Dr. Sims suggested in the epilogue. I was captivated throughout by the tales of Nome, Alaska and its people.

One of my favorite books so far this year! This is wonderful - but any summary would involve spoilers, and I wouldn’t do that for anything. Suffice it to say, I’ve listened to this little gem twice already, even though I obviously knew how it ended. It’s just so ingenious! And a protagonist after my own heart, which didn’t hurt either. And now, I’m off to see what else this author wrote - I’m a fan.

Whew! What a book! More twists and turns than any I’ve ever read - right up there with “Mousetrap”. One of those books that, when it ends you immediately start searching to see what else this author has written. That good.

I have to add this: there are three or four red-hot sex scenes in this book. Normally, at the first hint of this I would have stopped listening, turned it off, and quit. I don’t enjoy that at all. (I have children, I know how it works. I just don’t care to read about it.) But.... this book was so good, I was already so involved in the story, I just let it go. No way was I going to quit before finding out What Happened.

For me, that may be the ultimate endorsement- ha!

In terms of who will inherit the Kinsey Millhone throne in terms of sheer enjoy-ability, Lee Goldberg's Eve Ronin is now at the top of the list. Eve and Kinsey aren't that much alike, but they share that same kind of dogged determination to get to the heart of it, whatever it is. Both are ridiculously courageous, so much so you want to cover your eyes so you don't see the carnage coming up. Both are self-deprecating, apparently unaware of how others see them. And both haunt the greater-LA area with confidence and knowledge.

I'm hoping there are more books in this series -- it was my first. Oh, and I hope others will be a little bit longer. Hard to spend a credit on a 6 hour book -- but in this case, I guess I'll do it.

About two hours in, I settled back, knowing exactly where this book was headed: Grisham-light, a court battle the little guy would win, and ... Bob's your uncle.

I was wrong, several times over. Lots of twists and turns, good dialogue, likable characters, pretty reasonable plot, even though you will wonder, now and then, how someone smart enough to successfully manage millions of dollars of "wealth" can possibly be so naive.

All in all, a very satisfactory listen.

Such an great story of survival against all odds -- I couldn't help but marvel at his creativity in addition to his endurance.

Interesting too -- and far less laudable -- was the way he was treated by the press after he was found. Our cumulative "need to know" the most intimate details of someone else's life is unfortunate, especially for this man, who never set out to attract attention at all. Distressing, too, was the way the medical professionals treated him. As he begged for a tortilla -- a simple tortilla, his diet staple during his previous life, something he had dreamed about during his whole adventure -- they refused, and instead gave him a "small plate of white rice." Sometimes it seems like doctors -- or whoever runs hospitals -- are more intent on punishing patients than healing them.

Whatever, this is a wonderful audiobook -- one of those where I kept finding things to do, so I could keep on listening. I know I'll listen to this many more times.

Endlessly, on and on, Aubrey tells us how much she misses her husband. I quit at about half through -- but the endless, repetitive, moaning about his every little habit, look, word, dress, aroma.... well, it finally did me in. I get it. No one could miss it. Seriously, about a third of the book, so far, is this endless moaning, all the same stuff, all over again.

I quit. Very little was happening -- except that Aubrey met another man who -- guess what? is just like her husband! So now we have yet another platform for her endless whining about how much she misses him...

Yup! I feel better already. Life is just too short, y'know?!
