Historia
“Florida, we got it all. Motor sports, ribs, beer. You can drive on the sand right on up to the ocean. Fireworks every night.” That's how twelve-year-old C.C.’s father, who named her after his beloved Canadian Club whiskey, describes the appeal of their new home. The man is a born grifter, a used-car salesman who burned down his dealership in southern Ohio for enough insurance money to set up a life for himself, his wife, and his two young daughters in a place he picked largely at random, because the living seemed easy.

Interesting story, but
Revisado: 12-20-23
Ended abruptly. Felt unfinished. Wanted to learn more about how C.C. managed to reach the stability she describes at the end. And wanted a reason to care about her.
Narrator’s delivery took some getting used to. Over-emoting, as if on stage, making C.C.’s voice sometimes annoying. Also, a few mispronounced words, including Sooz for Suze (SOO-zee).

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Beach Read
Revisado: 10-27-20
The descriptions of marsh life were the best part of this book. From other reviewers familiar with the area it turns out that the author should have done more research and fact checking. I noticed comments about the dialect being inauthentic, and some the wildlife details not matching the area, etc. This misrepresentation might be a major annoyance to those from the area. However these inauthenticities may not bother those interested in the storyline. It’s not great literature. Hallmark movie. The comparisons to Barbara Kingsolver and Alice Hoffman are reaching and not warranted as the skills of those writers are farm more accomplished. Last, the story dragged. It didn’t need to be so long.

The narrator did an excellent job with the various voices. Occasionally, the accent was off but it still worked. The story touched my heart in places because the history is the history of my family. Well done!

I also purchased the kindle version but this was very pleasant to listen to as I performed my own tidying. The narrator is easy to listen to.

A lot of information, including many helpful ideas, is included. I was already familiar with the subject, however I enjoyed this fast review. I listened while purging my closets so it helped me keep my mind on the task. Karen Kingston, Denise linn, and Tehra Kathryn Collins are authors to consider if you are ready to move to longer works.

As an avid student of this author I listened non-stop. I have in the past always returned several times to her books as she presents wisdom that I am not always ready to consider or absorb. I've been listening (and reading) for more than twenty years, across various formats, and for me she comes across as a beloved teacher. I prefer listening to her because I love the personality that comes through.

Worthwhile Content, Wrong Narrator
Revisado: 01-19-16
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's style is one I associate with business, social science, and self-help books. For me, he spoils the material. His cadence isn't a good match for the author's content. And I don't perceive he cares about what he's reading. I have heard the author speak and would prefer to hear him read his own material.
