Listen at 1.2x speed
Revisado: 07-08-24
I found the narrator much more enjoyable when I changed to 1.2x speed. Still, this book isn't as strong as the first in my opinion. Still worth a read.

Good story with mediocre performances
Revisado: 03-19-24
The story was great but both narrators could have really benefitted from tweaked performances. Daisy's narrator sounded the same between her voice and the mother's voice and pretty much almost all the female voices so it was difficult to tell who was talking, what was thought inside minds, etc. Brittany's narrator was very monotone, but at least they tried to change it up for different characters.

Narrator seemed like he couldn't speak fast enough
Revisado: 07-01-23
The lore was very fun, especially for a little one shot, but the narrator read the sentences so quickly and with little inflection, it was frustrating to listen at times. You don't need to read slowly, but it would have been better had he not been racing to get every sentence out of his mouth.
World building was very fun!

Historia
At the end of the twenty-first century, climate change and famine almost ended humanity—until the discovery of the Klujns, a barbaric, humanoid species with strangely colored eyes and even stranger abilities. Their crystal claws and bones fertilize barren soil, and their tender meat is a super-protein. Klujns are both humans’ saviors and natural-born enemies, meant to be hunted and used.

Good narration, heavy handed rhetoric
Revisado: 03-28-23
Very heavy handed climate change rhetoric. I am very much all for saving the planet and do everything I can, but the climate change tones were a very "this is humanity's fault, and by extension, you as the reader's fault" which made me very uncomfortable. There is nothing about circuses, it's more gladiator based. The story was entertaining enough, but the narration saved the whole thing for me.

So we just aren't getting any storylines resolved
Revisado: 12-06-22
Absolutely frustrating. Not a single mystery of any storyline at all was resolved and I feel like I wasted my time. Plus the main character has a habit of clicking her teeth at times she is anxious which is always and hearing the narrator constantly have to say "clicking" drove me a little insane.

Great work by Natalie, not so much by the other
Revisado: 10-13-21
I loved the writing, it definitely was a fantastic ending to the duology.
My main issue lies in the narrator they got for Red. He isn't anything over the top impressive, but my main beef is the fact he didn't seem to listen to how Natalie voiced the characters in the first novel and during her parts and just... made up his own interpretation of how the characters sounded, which was nothing like Natalie had been doing. It ranged from annoying to obnoxious throughout and would have only taken a little effort on his part to try and match the character voices.
He also wasn't the best with intonation, often stressing weird syllables that would leave me wishing for Natalie to pick up the narration again whenever the POV changed.
Not the worst narrator I've listened to and certainly bearable, but it seems very silly to come into a project that has already been established and not try to at least match what had already been done.

Not a super diverse narrator
Revisado: 03-14-21
She was great for Will's Wales brogue but it was very difficult to know which character was speaking, male, female, or otherwise, because all the voices sounded remarkably similar or the same. Not the greatest for a book with at least six main characters.

Two out of three performances solid
Revisado: 11-17-20
Two of the three narrators were great, but the last one (female) would announce the chapter title loudly and then lower her voice so softly I had to jack up the volume to even understand what she was saying. It drove me insane, especially since I listen on a commute and, when the chapter would change, I would be blasted by the regular sound level of the next narrator. This continued to be a pain throughout the book, so much so that I began to dread the change of narrator. The narrators obviously didn't talk to each other about performances either because when characters were interchanged throughout the journey of the book, the performances for the same character were wildly different.
Overall a decent read with a refreshingly new storyline for the YA community with lackluster performances by the audiobook narrators.

There is child rape by a ghost in this book
Revisado: 01-04-20
I am not even closed to being finished, but NO WHERE on this website does it mention there's graphic child rape by a ghost.
It may end up being very good, but shame on all the publishers for not disclosing that.

Narrator can't do more than one accent
Revisado: 11-14-18
Jem is supposed to have a British accent, but the narrator can't be bothered to try harder than a few vowels. All her voices sound the same. Good story, poorly read.
