Historia
Sam Carlson is a projectionist in small-town Minnesota, where fantasies unspool in glorious black and white—for him and for his sweetheart, college-bound math whiz Sarah Haber. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Sam is sent to the Philippines and captured as a POW. Brutalized but unbroken by the Bataan Death March and POW camps, Sam is one of eighteen hundred starved and weakened prisoners herded into the cargo hold of a barbaric hell ship called the Arisan Maru, his survival doubtful.

Rubbish
Revisado: 10-25-24
Partisan detritus thinly disguised as a “spy” novel. The fine narrator could not save it. I can’t believe the same guy wrote some good books. This wasn’t one !

Historia
In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. In each, physical violence, racial animosity, the coercion of the weak by the strong all play their part, but playing a part too are love, affection, loyalty, and recognition that the last division of all to be overcome is the colour of the skin.

Eventually Mind Numbing
Revisado: 06-01-23
I loved the Masterpiece Theatre production of this book. Always intended to read it and finally bought the audio. The history meant to be dramatized is important and the narrator is quite good. But the same points are made over and over, the message becomes lost in the murk and the result is pretty dreadful. I had to quit with 6 hours left

Historia
The first novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Roman series. It is 42 AD, and Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. If adjusting to the rigours of military life isn't difficult enough for the bookish young man, he also has to contend with the disgust of his colleagues when, because of his imperial connections, he is appointed a rank above them.

Did not enjoy this at all. This philosophizing and the attempt to set a world record for unpronounceable names only barely distracted from the incredible luck of this way too heroic hero. So glad when it was over

Miserable
Revisado: 02-22-23
I hate to slam a book by the man who wrote Beneath a Scarlet Sky, which was excellent. This book is the most depressing, if-you-think-that-was-horrible wait until the next chapter. I realize the period of the story and the victims of war are real but I don’t get any redeeming qualities from this orchestrated misery. Couldn’t finish it
