Historia
The new novel - a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan - from the internationally acclaimed author, his first since IQ84. Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

Great book
Revisado: 03-25-24
As always, a wonderful journey written by a master.
Wasn’t too crazy about the audiobook narrator’s performance, but that is because I’m picky when it comes to stuff like that. The guy did a good job, but all the characters sounded pretty much the same. Even so, I could still understand who was talking to who, so it didn’t really matter.

As always Stephen King blows me away
Revisado: 11-10-23
The story is terrific. Stephen King’s writing is just top-notch. He narrates too and does a great job! Blair Brown’s narration is excellent as well. The only thing I don’t like about this audio book is the music between chapters and very occasionally sound effects. I mean really. Come on. All that aside, this story is a thrilling ride.

Well done
Revisado: 05-02-23
This was a pretty beneficial book. I learned a lot and my Spanish did improve. I’m only a beginner but I do see improvement.
The narrator was wonderful and the two Spanish speakers were very helpful.
HOWEVER, it would have been more effective if the speakers repeated the sentences once more each maybe even twice. You need to say the sentences out loud to get the feel for the language. So I was rewinding constantly. Nothing totally wrong with that, but when you’re driving that can be distracting.
‘And now the numbers…’ ok I get that learning numbers is important, but this chapter was overkill.
All in all, the audiobook was a good one. It had a great structure with Paul Noble narrating/translating and explaining things while two native Spanish speakers were pronouncing words and speaking sentences. It also gets points for not having ANY monotonous and horrible sounding background music like another learn-Spanish audio book that I wasted a credit on. Beware of audio books like those.
A couple complaints worth noting:
Conjugative forms of the word ‘Haber’ - ‘to have’ were strange and hard to get used to. I use Duolingo and there was no mention of it at all. Although, I’m not that far in the Duolingo lessons. But this book introduces it immediately. I brought it up with a native Latin American speaker and he rarely has heard anyone speak in that fashion. So it really made me question that aspect. Another strange example like that was ‘de donde es’. The book says ‘de donde es’ means ‘where are you from’ but it really should be ‘de donde eres’. ‘ De donde es’ translates to ‘where it is’. I asked another native Spanish speaker that I work with ‘de donde es?’ And he looked at me confused. It was pretty funny actually.
Despite these complaints, the book was great and worth a listen. That being said, using Duolingo as a companion to this book had been helpful. Especially, if you are just starting out.

Historia
Gass’ new novel moves from World War II Europe to a small town in postwar Ohio. In a series of variations, Gass gives us a mosaic of a life - futile, comic, anarchic - arranged in an array of vocabularies, altered rhythms, forms and tones, and broken pieces with music as both theme and structure, set in the key of middle C. It begins in Graz, Austria, 1938. Joseph Skizzen's father, pretending to be Jewish, leaves his country for England with his wife and two children to avoid any connection with the Nazis, who he foresees will soon take over his homeland....

Good story but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 10-15-22
The author is an incredibly talented writer. There were some interesting topics focused on and it did capture my interest at times. Overall, I found the story’s direction a bit dull and the protagonist somewhat aggravating. There had also been a confusing scene (that involved his librarian boss/land lord) that didn’t make any sense to me. No matter how many times I went through it. I wouldn’t really care that much, but it was an important scene. So that annoyed me.
I appreciated how the author included some of the classroom lectures. They were funny and intriguing.

Great Story
Revisado: 12-08-19
Here is further confirmation of T.C. Boyle’s skillful and original writing. A captivating plot where his characters are deeply explored. You are right there with them until the story ends. I guess you know that it’s a good book when you are sad the story is over. This has been my experience with all of Boyle’s stories. You don’t want them to end. The narration is impeccable. Graham Hamilton has a top notch voice that I could listen to all day.
