Historia
When Ada Calhoun stumbled upon old cassette tapes of interviews her father, celebrated art critic Peter Schjeldahl, had conducted for his never-completed biography of poet Frank O’Hara, she set out to finish the book her father had started 40 years earlier. As a lifelong O’Hara fan who grew up amid his bohemian cohort in the East Village, Calhoun thought the project would be easy, even fun, but the deeper she dove, the more she had to face not just O’Hara’s past, but also her father’s and her own.

So gorgeous and evocative
Revisado: 07-20-22
I chose to listen to the audiobook of “Also a Poet” out of convenience, but in the end I got so so so much out of choosing this medium, because the book relies heavily on recorded interviews, which are included. The effect is transportive and emotional, especially at the end. I don’t know how these recordings are reproduced in the printed text but I intend to find out: I loved this book so much I am buying a hardcover to keep on my shelf and read passages from again and again. I’ll probably listen to the audiobook again too!

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

The BIGGEST Bill Bryson fan around, especially of his audiobooks, and this one lived up to all my expectations. Love him as a writer AND a reader!

Historia
Nevada-Tan is a genre-bending new play that introduces us to Nick, a young man who struggles to escape loneliness and isolation in the years following the tragic Columbine shooting of 1999. Nick’s quest leads to a decade-long fixation with Nevada-Tan, a Japanese schoolgirl who committed a horrific crime in Sasebo in 2004. Mixing horror and dark humor, Nevada-Tan is a shocking exploration of secrets, tragedy and obsession, thrilling listeners with its surprising twists and turns.

Whoa, this was not what I expected, but was so so good! A fascinating story based on a True Crime I'd never heard of, I listened to this in two long chunks (though it's broken up by chapters for shorter listening, too). Made me wish there was a bookmark or highlight feature in Audible because so many parts -- about how we label people, about the difference between raw talent and privilege, etc., - were so interesting and made be go "huh!" aloud while listening.
But it was also just an entertaining and often funny story about what it's like to be a real loser in high school, the kind people are scared of. Thought the writing was so smart, and the performances great! Now I wanna see the movie or TV show based off of it, haha.
Totally recommend!

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

But I’ve listened to this book every night while falling asleep for about three years. Not because it puts me to sleep!!! But because it’s always interesting, always amusing, and anecdotal enough that you can pick it up at any random point and be totally engrossed. I recommend it to everyone. So many favorite parts, the chapter on Capability Brown being the best.
So nice I listened twice (but really like 11 times)!!!
