When a tremendous spacecraft takes orbit around Earth's moon and begins sending smaller landers down toward the North Pole, the newly arrived visitors quickly set up a permanent spaceport in Siberia. Need more chapter breaks
Revisado: 12-07-21
I have always loved these stories, and the newer ones I hadn't heard are just as good as the old ones. The reader's fine. The low rating is for the chapters. There are 27 vignettes in this audiobook and only 7 chapters. I sometimes listen at bedtime, and if I fall asleep, it's quite a chore getting back to where I drifted off.

Resonated with my 11 year old daughter
Revisado: 07-09-20
I listened to this audiobook with my daughter. I found it engaging and surprisingly subtle. Themes of hurt, love, independence and control are nicely threaded within a mystery. My daughter loved it so much she listened to it again with her mother.

This series continues to get more disturbing
Revisado: 04-25-17
If you could sum up Love Songs from a Shallow Grave in three words, what would they be?
whistling at demons
What other book might you compare Love Songs from a Shallow Grave to and why?
Earlier books in the series
What about Clive Chafer’s performance did you like?
He's quite subtle. He felt a bit deadpan until I got sufficiently tuned in to his style, then I realized how rich his performance is.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Like the Merry Misogynist, some of the imagery in this book is really grim. Doc Siri and his gang continue to charm. I found the plot believable and gripping.

Historia
In 1978 in poverty-stricken Laos, a man from the city with a truck was somebody—a catch for even the prettiest village virgin. The corpse of one of these bucolic beauties turns up in Dr. Siri’s morgue, and his curiosity is piqued. The victim was tied to a tree and strangled, but she had not, as the doctor had expected, been raped. And though the victim had smooth, pale skin over most of her body, her hands and feet were gnarled, callused, and blistered.

Much more grim than earlier
Revisado: 02-27-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, though less so than the earlier 5 books in the series. The plot did not thrill me, as the earlier books had.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Predictable
Which character – as performed by Clive Chafer – was your favorite?
Dr. Siri, Sivali, Dtui. I love how Chafer handles them all. He sounds flat, but if you listen closely, there is wonderful nuance to his characterizations.
Did The Merry Misogynist inspire you to do anything?

Any additional comments?
I love this series. This book was a bit grim, and the plot less thrilling, but I'm still moving on the next book.

Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Revisado: 07-17-16
Where does Anathem rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top Two
What other book might you compare Anathem to and why?
I don't have anything to compare it to. It found it profoundly deep and considered. With a very fresh perspective
Which scene was your favorite?
Erasmus leading the tour thru the history of the avout.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way. Too deep and too long. Need time to digest and think about stuff.
Any additional comments?
This book is weird. I may just be weird in the same way, because I loved it. Almost as much as I love Cryptonomicon.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Classic Pournelle, wooden narrator

What did you like best about this story?
The authors political sense. The exploration of a mildly dystopian future
Would you be willing to try another one of Lance Axt’s performances?
absolutely not
Was West of Honor worth the listening time?
barely
Any additional comments?
I loved this book as a teenager, and was looking for something diverting and not too thought provoking. The narrator is pretty bad

Historia
The River of Time brings together 12 of David Brin's stories, including "The Crystal Spheres", which won the Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction Short Story in 1985. Here are powerful tales of heroism and humanity, playful excursions into realms of fancy, and profound meditations on time, memory, and our place in the universe. Who guides our fate? And can we ever hope to wrest control for ourselves?
