Historia
Germany, 1942. Franciscan friar Anton Starzmann is stripped of his place in the world when his school is seized by the Nazis. He relocates to a small German hamlet to wed Elisabeth Herter, a widow who seeks a marriage - in name only - to a man who can help raise her three children. Anton seeks something too - atonement for failing to protect his young students from the wrath of the Nazis. But neither he nor Elisabeth expects their lives to be shaken once again by the inescapable rumble of war.

Beautiful, engaging story
Revisado: 05-17-23
It was easy to become immersed in this wartime story. Hawker captured the dangerous beauty of resisting, even in small ways, and the risks of taking a stand in a small town. Enjoyed the details of children at play, of parents trying to stretch their income, of a special occasion dress being ruined minutes before the big event, and how people pulled together to solve the problem. The narrator did a wonderful job with each character’s voice, to where I wasn’t bothered by the accents he used.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Heartwarming and humorous love story
Revisado: 03-21-23
Love, love, LOVE this book! What an unexpected treat. Vividly crafted love story that takes you to as many unexpected places as an octopus out of water. Van Pelt has created a dreamy world grounded in tragedy and hope, and populated with memorable characters appealing in their flawed vulnerability. A new favorite. The narration is spot-on, and perfectly suits the characters. Urie's Marcellus will stay with me forever.

Historia
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

An engaging middle chapter
Revisado: 02-20-23
Jemisin continues to weave a multifaceted story where the wonderful characters evolve in unexpected ways as the Season continues. New characters join the saga of the heroine's bittersweet adventure. There is wonder and drama and twists and turns among the obelisks. There are nasty little creatures I never want to meet in real life. Throughout, the heroine soldiers on, learning what she must do to realize her hope of [spoiler]. Looking forward to the third book in the trilogy and to how a brewing conflict plays out.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Fantastic story beautifully narrated
Revisado: 02-20-23
Wonderful! I LOVE this book. The story is engaging and pulls you in at multiple points through the lives of Damaya, Syenite, and Essun. There is heartache and triumph, action and adventure, mystery and intrigue, and a wonderful feminine spirit that holds it together. Jemisin is an immensely talented storyteller and writer. Miles is superb in her characterization and sense of wonder. A must!

Historia
Set in the London of the 1660s and of the early 21st century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city, and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. As the novel opens, Helen has been summoned by a former student to view a cache of 17th-century Jewish documents newly discovered in his home during a renovation.

Beautifully crafted novel with engaging characters
Revisado: 09-06-22
One of my all-time favorites! Beautifully crafted novel with engaging characters and a moving story. So often in books with multiple timelines one outshines the other. Here, both storylines move along lyrically, taking the reader through time and space. I enjoyed escaping into these characters' tales and was sorry to reach the final chapter. The narrator did a lovely job capturing the characters and story.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Stick with it
Revisado: 07-26-22
More than once in the first half of the book I considered not finishing it, as I didn’t warm to any of the three leading ladies or to the story. Based on positive reviews, I stuck with it, and boy am I glad I did. The second half of the book will stay with me forever, with its haunting, lyrical beauty. It moved me to tears more than once. If you’re not sold at first, stick with it.

In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

Intense and beautiful historical tale relevant to today
Revisado: 06-16-21
What a beautiful book. But it’s one of the most I intense books I’ve read as well! Mix the drama of childbirth to mothers sick with the Great Influenza, with the devastation from World War I, and add to that Sinn Fein and the infamous mother-baby homes and orphanages run by nuns, and you get a sweeping story told in the setting of one small makeshift ward in an understaffed urban hospital during a pandemic. The story carries you away. The narrator was wonderful. She brought it all to life, even the cries of women in childbirth!

Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

A well-crafted tale with delicious twists and turns. The author takes you on an amazing, non-linear journey through history, real and imagined, with delightful characters, complete with honorable qualities and flaws. Among the journey is an engaging cat-and-mouse relationship filled with tension and suspense. Enjoyable at many levels. The narrator added a lot to the experience of listening to the tale. Highly recommended.

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them.

Clever use of history with a romantic spin
Revisado: 04-09-19
Thoroughly enjoyed this whirl of detailed history and romance. It seems like readers/listeners are in two camps, with extreme opinions of Harkness's books. If you like richly detailed history, down to architecture, food, and dress, then this book may be for you. She has done a masterful job of setting her romantic leads in an exciting chapter of history, and weaving real characters into the fictional story. I love the series, the characters, the drama, and the setting. Looking forward to the third book in the series.

Appealing to beta males and more
Revisado: 01-24-19
A fun, clever, laugh-out-loud tale that goes to unexpected places. Fisher Stevens does a fantastic job capturing the manic madness as well as the personalities and details of many characters, from Saville Row suits to Flock of Seagulls hair, to an unusual take on the soul. At its heart the story is a warm tale of friendship and the ties that bind the people who become family. The next time you walk down the streets of San Francisco and hear a noise in the storm drain, it will give you pause.
