Don't Bother
Revisado: 03-07-20
This book is an annoying combination of cliche hard boiled cop with soppy sentimentality and a plot that is simultaneously implausible and irritating. Plus a climatic scene that is based on such an amazingly degree of stupidity on the part of the cops that I really couldn't believe she'd really written it that way. Will not be reading/listening to this author again.

Historia
When young teacher Anna Blackwell is found dead in her home, the police think her death was suicide or a tragic accident. After all, Stonebridge is a quiet country village in the Scottish Borders, where murders just don't happen. But Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez soon arrives from faraway Shetland when his ex-wife, Sarah, asks him to look into the case. The local gossips are saying that her new husband, Tom, was having an affair with Anna. Could Tom have been involved with her death?

A Mere Short Story
Revisado: 05-28-18
And not a very good short story. Shame on you Ann Cleeves for releasing this as a novel, for that matter, for releasing it at all. Absolutely not up to your standards.

Historia
Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive....

Morally confusing over written tripe
Revisado: 02-22-17
Would you try another book from Liane Moriarty and/or Caroline Lee?
Although I have read a previous book by Liane Moriarty, I certainly will never read another after this one.
What was most disappointing about Liane Moriarty’s story?
the plot was ridiculous and the head handed morality lessons confusing
What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I really enjoyed her Australian accent. If only she had less enthusiastically lisped through the parts by the one child.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Nope

Historia
A sophisticated and suspenseful novel about the poignant lives of two women living in different eras.... On the day John F. Reader's voice so irritating
Revisado: 10-19-13
What would have made The Obituary Writer better?
I might have enjoyed this book if I had read it in book form or if someone else had performed it as an audio book, but I could not get beyond the cloying voice of the reader. It was like chalk on a blackboard to me.
Would you be willing to try another book from Ann Hood? Why or why not?
If I read a really good review of another book by Ann Hood I would be willing to give it a try, but only on the basis of a great review.
Would you be willing to try another one of Tavia Gilbert’s performances?
Never
What character would you cut from The Obituary Writer?
No one
