Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

The scope of the novel was impressive, especially coverage of the nuances of blacks planting roots to the west and the north.
Revisado: 03-28-25
Like so many other novels of great scope, this one was no different in so far as it focused on the lives of three people and followed their storyline with an emotional appeal based on the challenges of their lives as primary and the lives of the waves of black Southerners as general, and somehow secondary. The author touched upon those successes and even greatness of blacks who made their way in America to the highest levels of society and gained the respect of all society, and that was a nice touch.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Intrigue at its best, unspooled in a gripping way.
Revisado: 11-17-24
The buried intrigue, unearthed like an earthquake; the end revealing what the knowing reader of and listener to audios of Mick Herron’s books, and follower of the Apple TV+ Slow Horses series, thought was strikingly familiar about the voice of one of the main characters in the Berlin backstory.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

One more shipwreck
Revisado: 11-15-23
The story is one of lost seamen, to be found chiefly at antiquarian book fairs, but not of interest only to such aficionados who inhabit such venues; this was well written and spoken, and, more importantly, not boring.

Historia
Exclusively from Audible. The Secret Agent is based on an actual attempt made in 1894 to blow up the Greenwich Observatory. A labyrinth of greed, corruption, and betrayal, it is the most darkly humorous of all Conrad's tales. It follows a European secret agent, Adolf Verloc, 'a London shop owner' with anarchist leanings who becomes reluctantly involved in a plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory. Full of great characters, melodramatic irony and psychological intrigue the tale is far from simple....

A Corrupt and Greedy Man
Revisado: 11-05-23
The Secret Agent is an uncompromisingly brutal and penetrating portrayal of a man, Verlock, corrupted by money to betray his country, set against a very satisfactory dynamic of the limits of a wife’s regard for her husband, during a period of anarchy in England.

Historia
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.

A rise and fall like no other in modern times
Revisado: 08-01-23
This narrative was astonishing in its scope and detail, like no other devolvement into the character and motivation of Germany’s leader, or Fuhrer, during 1929 to 1945 which I have ever encountered, although the new Netflix biography, and history is done extremely well, and includes translations of Hitler’s speeches, which, when the seen beside this novel, go to show how the mass of a people can be led to believe that they can rise again, and be strong after being cut down, in their case, after the treaty of 1918, and by one totally committed, to the death (in the case of WWII, 50 millions dead), to the cause of defending his country and leading it to victory against his and, ultimately their, common enemy as he, and eventually they, defined it.

Historia
Inextricably linked with the fatwa called against its author in the wake of the novel’s publication, The Satanic Verses is, beyond that, a rich showcase for Salman Rushdie’s comic sensibilities, cultural observations, and unparalleled mastery of language. The book begins with two Indians plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their airliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.

The subtlety of the message: There is no God but God…..the rest is up to us.
Revisado: 03-14-23
I particularly liked the way in which the author delivered his message, through the subterfuge of comic characters, carrying on in a life confused by the crashing of dissimilar views of fate, and Fortune, in the hands of a supreme being.

For centuries, the city of Alexandria Beneath the Mountains was a meeting point of East and West. Then it vanished. In 1833, it was discovered in Afghanistan by the unlikeliest person imaginable: Charles Masson, deserter, pilgrim, doctor, archaeologist, spy, one of the most respected scholars in Asia, and the greatest of nineteenth-century travelers.

DeGaulle’s struggle to make France a power even under the heel of Germany after the invasion of France in World War II is a story studded with anecdotes, passionate arguments, tactics of war and elements of great character, without which France would not have achieved what it did after World War II. The reader was exceptional.

James Keene had it all: cars, girls, houses up and down the Gold Coast. But behind his well-connected star athlete façade was a money-obsessed drug dealer desperate to make the big score to get him out of the business. When he was sentenced to prison, it seemed the only lessons he would learn would be about navigating convict society. Instead, he was offered a chance to regain his freedom in return for going undercover in the nation’s highest security prison for the criminally insane.

True to life
Revisado: 07-30-22
A story filled with sadness, and irony – the sadness: The brutal deaths of so many young women and the closure so many families were deprived of for so many years on account of the deranged mind of the psycho who took their children from them, the irony: that during his time in a prison for deranged criminals, risking life and limb as the principal in a deal with the government to extract a confession from the psycho incarcerated there, in the hope that he would succeed in his mission and be released in time to spend time with his father before his death, and that although he did have that time with his father, the father of the narrator in the Apple series based upon this book, Ray Liotta, died before the series began.
