Certain Rules-Audible review
Revisado: 05-13-19
I own the Kindle & paperback also. I followed along with the narrator. There should be a male & female narrator. This narrator made the grandfather pitched so high & snarky that it sounds more like a middle school girl. The intonation is totally wrong for Scott, the alpha teenage male, in certain areas. Narration for Katie had some good points but still comes off bland. The bottom line: the narrator requires much more experience & training. STORY: YA age 15 and above. Popular jock falls for the shy girl theme. Only pitfall is a character shows up out of nowhere near the end that causes the "breaking-up" moment. It simply does not ring true. Due to this issue, the story element is really a 4.5.

Historia
Henry James’ stories are classic gems of subtle wit and irony. Set in the exacting social landscape of New York City at the turn of the century, Washington Square is the tale of a wealthy but shy young woman caught between conflicting family expectations. John McDonough’s warm narration traces her remarkable inner journey.

Outstanding performance by John McDonough
Revisado: 04-14-19
I will be totally honest. This Henry James's work is really the only one I enjoy reading.
Yes, please forgive me Henry James fans.
However, I do enjoy watching the movie versions of his work and I REALLY LOVE John McDonough's narration.
He is EXCELLENT in performing each character from Dr. Sloper and Morris Townsend to the feminine Catherine and her meddlesome Aunt Penniman so uniquely and so beautifully distinct.
I even looked him up for any other audio books he has recorded.
The pace of the narration gives the proper respect to such a revered work.
I totally encourage investing this excellent recording.

The new hire at the family-owned bagel store is somewhat colorful, but his dad is sure he's the perfect man for Zeke.

Book & Narration-5 stars
Revisado: 03-03-19
I liked the book itself-found it very engaging & am glad I bought the narration. The actor narrating did an excellent job of creating each character with depth & perception. This book is beautiful in every way. In what is important to love & be loved in return. I enjoy following along following the text with the narration.

Historia
Spencer is surprised when he's approached by the gorgeous construction worker he's admired from the safety of his office window. Acting spontaneously for the first time in his 38 years, Spencer takes Emilio home. When the casual hookup turns into the potential for love, Spencer realizes that if he wants to build a life with Emilio, he'll need to be strong enough to slay his personal demons and learn to trust again.

enjoyed story/recording but only one issue
Revisado: 11-04-18
I find Ezekiel Robison's narration and creating the minor characters but especially Emilio to be wonderful.
My only issue is with how he performs Spencer. He tries to make Spencer to be the stilted, nervous and insecure character as he is in the book. The narrator attempts these characteristics in the following way: he reads Spencer's lines by lowering his voice within his throat. It simply sounds unnatural and unappealing. The intent is there but the result comes off as false and off-putting.
But, I am still glad I purchased the recording.

Historia
"A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright – a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster. You think I’m talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It’s no deformity, no disease. And I’ll stay this way forever – ruined – unless I can break the spell...."

Glad I bought this recording
Revisado: 11-04-18
I'll admit I already was familiar with this recording because I have the CD copy. I like to read the book along with the audio recording. I am a big fan of modernized fairytales. Not all of them work, but Beastly does.
Chris Patton creates the characters extremely well and makes them come alive. He does an especially good job with the way he performs the high school female of the book, Lindy.
