Historia
The late Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño has been called the García Marquez of his generation. The Savage Detectives is a hilarious and sexy, meandering and melancholy, companionable and complicated road trip through Mexico City, Barcelona, Israel, Liberia, and finally the desert of northern Mexico. It is the first of Bolaño's two giant works, with 2666, to be translated into English and is already being hailed as a masterpiece.

One of the best novels of the 20th century
Revisado: 10-26-23
This is my second read/listen through. A beautiful, crushing story about young poets who get older, always drifting, always paying penance. The performances in this reading are perfectly done. While one actor reads the vast majority of the narratives, each account has a distinct tone that comes across wonderfully. This is one of my absolute favorites, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Simon is the best delivery boy that Mr Edwards’s restaurant has ever had. He’s on time every time, and he’s gotten nothing but good reviews. But he needs more money. His mother’s medical treatment won’t pay for itself, and his father is already working three jobs to try to make ends meet. But it might just be his lucky day: Mr. Edwards has another job for him. It’s more delivery work, but not the usual kind. You might even say that it’s out of this world. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the pay is fantastic.

Historia
Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

One of the best stories I've ever experienced
Revisado: 06-23-23
A long, drawn out mountain of a story. Hilarious, heartbreaking, boring, and terrifying. I can't think of a story that better encapsulates the ennui of being young and watching the world drift by. I loved it.
The performance was absolutely perfect. The narrator, apologies I don't have his name in front of me, was incredible. His cadence was impeccable, the mannerisms he lent to characters were consistent and appropriate. I'd listen to him read just about anything.
This translation is also excellent. I've tried reading other translations over the years, but have always bounced off of them after about 100 pages. This translation was natural and fluid.
I can't recommend The Magic Mountain highly enough.

Historia
For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. This collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies.

Fantastic narrators really make this one great
Revisado: 06-16-22
This is a big glug of a book. There are about six or so different stories that are just endlessly retold for about 50 hours. But the highlight for me was the narrators. Andrew and Shaun were phenomenal. And the blooper real at the end was hilarious.

Neil Gaiman did it better
Revisado: 02-05-21
I'm amazed at how little actual story is in the Bible, and how much of it is just rehashing and God complaining about people looking other gods more than him. Would definitely recommend the cliff notes instead of the unabridged version.

Absolutely beautiful
Revisado: 04-19-19
I'm working demo on a construction site as I listen, and it's been a struggle to explain what my eyes keep watering, especially when finishing. This is something comparable to Nabokov or Kundera. I can't give it any higher praise. The narrator was absolutely spellbinding. Please give it a listen.

Ridiculous fun, a good popcorn book
Revisado: 02-11-19
This isn't exactly a good read, but it's at least entertaining. There are too many characters to keep up with, but the plot was easy enough to keep up with. I'd recommend it as a fun palette cleanser between heavy reads

Historia
Alan Moore channels both the ecstatic visions of William Blake and the theoretical physics of Albert Einstein through the hardscrabble streets and alleys of his hometown of Northampton, UK. In the half a square mile of decay and demolition that was England's Saxon capital, eternity is loitering between the firetrap housing projects. Embedded in the grubby amber of the district's narrative, among its saints, kings, prostitutes, and derelicts, a different kind of human time is happening.
