Love this - wish there were more
Revisado: 05-31-21
The narrator's voice is perfect for ASMR and the stories are wonderful. I wish there were more. Only comment is that each story could be about 5 minutes longer for better relaxation/sleep.

I was looking forward to trying this ASMR series, but it fails to load. It's the only Audible I have that doesn't work. ????

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Fascinating alternative history
Revisado: 04-17-20
I love science fiction, and great alternative histories that take full advantage of the "what if" in depth immediately catch my attention. I'm also as much a fan of Asimov and Tiptree as I am of Stephenson and Gibson, so I'll read anything from the Golden Years to present day. All of these elements merged beautifully in The Calculating Stars.
The space race began a few years prior to my birth (John Glenn orbited the Earth when I was 10 months old, with transistor circuitry in the capsule my father designed - along with hundreds if not thousands of other EEs). I watched Armstrong step on the moon, having been one of those little girls that collected mission stickers and fantasized about the US starting a colony on the Moon.
This book, by giving the space race an extremely different start, did a great job of showing a plausible alternative history for its time. It caught me from the very start - and reminded me of the Cold War fears of living in a big city and seeing fallout shelters on every block. It then took me along that differing road of space exploration in a wonderfully written way.
Highly recommended.

Historia
In her bestselling autobiography, Bedsit Disco Queen, Tracey Thorn recalled the highs and lows of a 30-year career in pop music. But with the touring, recording and extraordinary anecdotes, there wasn't time for an in-depth look at what she actually did for all those years: sing. She sang with warmth and emotional honesty, sometimes while battling acute stage fright.

Fascinating book on singing from an insider
Revisado: 11-18-19
Tracey Thorne is one of my favorite singers, and this very candid book talks about not only her singing career and how she learned to sing, but some of the obstacles that she hit, etc.
She also gives examples about other famous singers and methods about how they sing that make their voices unique. This book was wonderful. Highly recommend!
