Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Spitting on Vets? Never Happened!
Revisado: 07-23-24
Once again we have this old lie about protestors spitting on vets, and hating them for their service. This was just propaganda from the war machine to smear protestors and distract from our message that he war was wrong. We were saying "Support our troops, bring them home!" We were right about it all.
I don't know if women were kicked out of vet meetings, but that seemed unlikely too. There were just too many inaccuracies in this book.
This novel is more soap opera than insightful novel, but it is entertaining, and does inform about our heroic women in Vietnam.

Powerful writing and performance
Revisado: 02-02-23
Mina is so good at writing women in the workplace, struggling against limitations and assumptions. The dialog and action are outstanding also.

Historia
The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life.

An Angry Woman
Revisado: 10-03-22
The narrator of this book is a very angry woman. She's angry, smart, and a liar. She has needed to be all three in order to stay alive. She moves fast, and she drives the story at speed, to avoid being murdered or committing suicide. Along the way, she saves her two daughters, and the anorexic rock star husband of her best friend, who has run off with her husband. The best friend, that is. But that's only the start of her wild ride, and I loved it all. She is amazing, and quite funny too, if you like very dry desperate humor.

Vivid, Sexy, and Sweet
Revisado: 03-04-22
Powerful writing brings this story of two lovers facing complicated challenges into vivid focus. The plot is a bit soapy at times, but it moves quickly, and the characters are unforgettable. The tenderness and care between them brought tears to my eyes.

Funny!
Revisado: 01-14-22
One reviewer did not find this book funny, but it is. Hilarious, in fact, if you're OK with jokes that poke at the assumptions of entitled people who aren't comfortable with difference. Or people who don't believe mothers ever have complicated feelings about their kids. Or anyone who believes that life isn't complicated and fascinating.

Powerful Writing
Revisado: 06-11-16
Loss, grief and fear almost control a young woman fleeing from her past, but she is saved by her drive to create art. A dog and a kind man help her recover. Much of the plot is familiar, but the powerful writing makes it live and breathe. A wonderful book, excellent audio.

Cuba occupies a place of undisputed fascination in the American psyche. Despite its proximity to America, this island nation remains a mystery to most Americans. Few Americans have traveled to Havana, and still fewer have traveled deeper into this isolated country. Chris Messner, a photographer, is one of the few Americans who have been able to travel extensively throughout this island.

No Insight or Info
Revisado: 03-04-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
His fiends in Cuba are his guides, people that he pays for services. Insight? Don't expect it. Information? Only if you are interested in the details of his meals. You'll love this book if you enjoy self-absorbed boors.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Astonishment that anyone can be so dense and so focused on the wrong details.

Historia
At first, the murder scene appears sad, but not unusual: a young woman undone by drugs and prostitution, her six-year-old daughter dead alongside her. But then detectives find a strange piece of evidence in the squalid house: the platinum credit card of a very wealthy - and long dead - steel tycoon. What is a heroin-addicted hooker doing with the credit card of a well-known and powerful man who died months ago? This is the question that the most junior member of the investigative team, Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths, is assigned to answer.

Charming and funny, always surprising
Revisado: 02-20-14
Any additional comments?
Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths is someone that you might not want to work with, but you'll love being in her head. She's difficult, funny, too smart, and always surprising. She's obsessed with the murder of a former "prozzy" and her six year old daughter, a case that connects with a dead millionaire and a bent cop. Fiona's extraordinary and hilarious observations keep the plot humming along. If you like Denise Mina's working class heroines you'll love Fiona. Siriol Jenkins' narration brings her to vivid life, excellent job!

Buckle up for a joy ride through physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and astronomy. Drawing on conversations with hundreds of the world's top scientists and her own work as an award-winning science writer, Natalie Angier does the impossible: she makes science fascinating and seriously fun, even for those of us who, in Angier's words, "still can't tell the difference between a proton, a photon, and a moron".

Just Too Cute
Revisado: 07-19-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you love the writing in women's magazines like Cosmo and O, you might enjoy this. I was hoping for a painless introduction to current theories in science, but was too irritated by the author's constant digressions and cutesy jokes to finish this book. This author qualifies for a seat at my dinner party from Hell.
