First came to know of Ian Fulton through the Canine Paradigm podcast. He has a voice that defies description but I’ll try: melodic, hypnotic, powerful, very powerful, other-worldly, extraordinary and more. His narration of his memoir as a person with a type of dwarfism speaks to, heals, and challenges all of us. I cried, I cheered, I laughed, and was deeply moved.

Thoroughly enjoyable to listen to Andrew Cotter narrate the story of the dogs he loves and respects. He addresses common misconceptions about dogs and gently offers alternatives, all interlaced with the story of his life and exquisitely memorable experiences with his dogs. Oh and lots of self-effacing humor!

I had thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommended Atticus Lush’s previous book, “Preparation for the Next Life” powerfully written with distinct and memorable characters. I’m 5 hours into this one and am bagging it, too boring, lack of plot, etc., and find myself thinking, “please make it end because the contrast between this and his other is painful.”

The story was passable: good concept, but painfully predictable. The narrator’s sing-song tonality and poor imitation- no, awful!!! - portrayal of the Dalai Lama seemed disrespectful at best. Listened for 4 hours and hated it!

What could Paul Auster have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The character of the dog lacked authenticity. It would have been better had the author not imposed so many human attributes onto Mr Bones, e.g., dream content, conversations, capacity to predict outcomes of human relationships.

What about Joe Barrett’s performance did you like?

His narration was the only reason I gave the book three stars as he was believable, varied his pace appropriately, and matched the characters.

I had a bit of a struggle following the thread of the story between the characters, however the narration skills of these amazing actors overcame this difficulty for the most part. As indicated in other reviews, the story is unrelentingly grim, realistic, and painful to listen to because of its adherence to accurate portrayal of individual experiences in World War II.

I have been quite taken by the Hardy oeuvre: have both read and listened to more than ten books; have swooned over nearly all; but this one is by far the worst. I tried to get past Mr. Vance's sing-song and condescending narration but couldn't because there was not enough character draw to keep me engaged in this story. After 90 minutes, decided I'd given this enough time and deleted it from my phone..

I've listened to several other Rose Tremain novels and this one left the most to be desired. I couldn't get attached to any of the main characters as their flaws, especially their extreme lack of empathy for others, far outweighed any evident positive attribute. However, I listened to the entire book because Ms. Stevensen's gift of narration and acting is a treat to hear regardless of the quality of the content.

This book provides an unapologetic, refreshing, biblical-based perspective on the responsibilities of Christians. The only disappointment was that when the book quoted scripture, the narrator assumed an almost-Ossie Davis tone which detracted from the content because it wasn't genuine.

Not of Wilde's usual caliber

This period piece by Wilde was not as enjoyable to listen to as were "The Importance of Being Earnest" or "An Ideal Husband" both of which were literary treats. This play merely seems to dramatize Americans' lack of appreciation for all that is British without being either funny or enlightening. I'm not partial to the favorable portraiture of Americans but the characters in this play were one-dimensional and not engaging, and I couldn't suspend disbelief in the premise of the story. I tried, but I couldn't listen to more than 30 minutes. Instead, I'd highly recommend the two plays previously mentioned.
