Historia
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. Disappointing
Revisado: 04-25-25
It wasn’t much of a mystery. It was obvious from the beginning who-dunnit. It was more of a character study about a lonely man and a troubled girl, which might have been alright if that is what one was expecting.

Ridiculous
Revisado: 04-01-25
I loved it starting out but when the fantasy started, I began to dislike it. As it progressed it became more and more ridiculous. “It” didn’t eat the whole time it was in the trunk but when it got out it was ravenous and began killing everything. Then when adalaide accepted it as her sister she became tame and didn’t kill anymore??? I was extremely disappointed.

Historia
“What am I, bologna?” Mary Rodgers (1931-2014) often said. She was referring to being stuck in the middle of a talent sandwich: the daughter of one composer and the mother of another. And not just any composers. Her father was Richard Rodgers, perhaps the greatest American melodist; her son, Adam Guettel, a worthy successor. What that leaves out is Mary herself, also a composer, whose musical Once Upon a Mattress remains one of the rare revivable Broadway hits written by a woman. Shy is the story of how it all happened.

Christine baranski’s narration
Revisado: 02-26-25
I don’t think this would have been as good in the written version because baranski made it even funnier and more interesting. Some of it was a little boring because I wasn’t familiar with a lot of the theater people she talks about but otherwise very entertaining.

Historia
Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts. A frightening pattern is emerging, but what do these nine people have in common?

Just so so
Revisado: 03-28-24
Narration was very annoying. It was as though he was reading a business journal and trying to make it exciting. The story lacked intrigue or excitement. I got this because of the NYT review but was very disappointed.

Great story
Revisado: 02-25-24
The story was great but she didn’t give enough information about some things and too much about others. For instance, the sex between papa and Eliza went on way too long. The voice of Conna Lee was annoying but the other voices were good.

All of the characters, with the exception of Clarice, are unlikable. I got so tired of the depressive ramblings of everyone, that I couldn’t wait for this to be over.

Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 09-13-23
I really wanted to give this a 3.5 but couldn’t get that too happened. Although it was good and the story was compelling, it was my least favorite of the three books I’ve read of his. I thought there was way too much unnecessary description. For instance, he described Titus getting dressed in his uniform in great detail. It was as though he was trying to make the story longer.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-01-23
The reviews I read described it as darkly humorous but I did not find it so. I barely smiled a few times. The haplessness of penny was an annoyance for me. I could not feel sympathy for her. The narrator was terrific. Her accents were right on.

Historia
July 3. 1932. Shivering and in shock, Evie Grace Devlin watches the Starlite Palace burn into the sea and wonders how she became a person who would cause a man to kill himself. She’d come to Galveston to escape a dark past in vaudeville and become a good person, a nurse. When that dream is cruelly thwarted, Evie is swept into the alien world of dance marathons. All that she has been denied- a family, a purpose, even love - waits for her there in the place she dreads most: the spotlight.

Repetitive
Revisado: 09-01-23
Although interesting, there was too much of the same info and situations about the marathon. It seemed like she was trying to make a short story into a long one. I have been a big fan of her previous books but this one was not my favorite. The narrator’s voice was annoying at times. The men’s voices were better than the women’s.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.
