Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

A wonderful story of adventure through the different spheres of life by Scottish author George MacDonald. Listeners will fall in love with this "Christ-like" character, Gibbie, who is a mute, yet truly good in heart and in deed. A uniquely creative tale that will capture both the old and the young for ages to come.

Such a great story of life. It was difficult to understand the Scottish Brogue parts but it was mostly the narrator parts so that made up for it :)

It’s 1936, in Flint Michigan. Times may be hard, and ten-year-old Bud may be a motherless boy on the run, but Bud’s got a few things going for him. 1. He has his own suitcase full of special things. 2. He’s the author of Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. 3. His momma never told him who his father was, but she left a clue: flyers advertising Herman E. Calloway and his famous band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression!!!!!! Bud’s got an idea that those flyers will lead him to his father.

Historia
Traditionally, the Orthodox Church has appointed forty days of rest and seclusion after childbirth for mothers to recover from the rigors of birth and get to know their new babies. In the modern world, it can be difficult to understand how to use this time to the fullest in the way it was intended. The authors of A Sacred Beginning—a therapist and a pediatrician who are both mothers themselves—come to the rescue with a resource that addresses the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of a mother's recovery from birth and embarkation on her new life.

A One-of-a-Kind Comprehensive Book
Revisado: 12-08-21
A Sacred Beginning: Nurturing Your Body, Mind & Soul During Baby’s First Forty Days by Sarah Brangwynne and Sasha Rose Oxnard is a one-of-a-kind comprehensive book intended for new mothers. I was originally skeptical, worried that it would impose a whole slew of pat prescriptions for the post-partum period. My fears were totally unfounded. The more I listened, the more my apprehension dissipated. Here were two mothers presenting a detailed road map, with each day scrupulously thorough in all the different angles and perspectives. Each day had points to ponder. Occasionally there was medical advice. There were practical tips, theological concerns, exercises. I have honestly never read a book for the post-partum period that covered everything from common feeding concerns to making a connection with the Ladder of Divine Ascent and our path to holiness!
The post-partum period is hard and perhaps it is harder still because in this day and age there is very little meaning ascribed to this period. It is hard for the average new mother to manage all her emotions, physical needs, spiritual needs, relationship needs, etc etc etc. By providing a broad framework for each day of the post-partum period, the authors are laying out a rich roadmap for new mothers to consider. The authors have tried to sincerely address each topic from as wide a range of perspectives as possible. And most importantly they also leave room for our own individual experience and concerns. You really don’t feel as if you need to follow a one-right-way method for the post-partum period. Rather you are imbued with a sense of purpose and inspiration. It really makes me wish this book was around when I was having my babies!

Historia
The 20th-century elder Abba Matta of Egypt, known in the West as Matthew the Poor, is widely regarded as the greatest Egyptian elder since St. Antony the Great. This series constitutes the first appearance in English of a selection of the informal talks Abba Matta gave to his fellow monks and to visitors. In simple, accessible language, he addresses subjects ranging from scripture to the church year to everyday life in the world. To hear these talks is to sit at the feet of one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our age.

Pearls of Wisdom for the Modern Age
Revisado: 05-11-20
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the words of Abba Matta on the audiobook, Words for Our Lives: The Spiritual Words of Matthew the Poor, narrated by Kristina Wenger. This book, for me, was perfectly suited to the audiobook format. His words and teachings were divided up into topical sections and so I could listen to one section, say, while preparing dinner, and then stop and easily resume while driving to the grocery store, for example. It was also helpful for me to read it in snippets because the words of Abba Matta were so beautiful and illuminating that I did not want to rush through it.
The fact that this man lived the Christian life in recent history is what really strikes me. It is so comforting that in this day and age a person can decide, through the influence of the Holy Spirit, to follow his calling and commit his life 100% to Christ, just like the saints and martyrs of the first centuries did. And it’s even more wonderful because then his wisdom is shed through the lens of this modern world and not from say, the fourth century. One story in particular about a relative of his who, through his own fault, was failing medical school illustrates how this contemporary elder can shed spiritual wisdom onto a modern and perhaps mundane issue. Abba Matta did not rebuke his relative for being lazy but rather encouraged him to pray and work and all would be well. That last part is what really struck me. How could he say that? Only a man of tremendous faith could make such a promise.
I can already tell that I will be listening to Abba Matta’s words over and over again because they put me in such a positive frame of mind. They really help to reorient my thoughts and allow me to believe that love and hope and forgiveness are all within my grasp.

Historia
Ancient Faith has produced a fresh update and redesign of a book cherished by a generation of seekers. Written in an accessible manner for the average lay person, Orthodox Worship offers insights into the Orthodox liturgy. Early Christians preserved a continuity of worship from the Old Covenant to the New, employing elements from the Jewish Temple liturgy, the synagogue liturgy, and the rituals of the Jewish home.

Required Reading for Orthodox Christians!
Revisado: 12-05-19
Orthodox Worship: A Living Continuity with the Synagogue, the Temple, and the Early Church by Benjamin D. Williams and Harold B. Anstall is a wonderful book. I quite enjoyed having the audible version to listen to while driving in the car or preparing supper. The narrator’s voice was a bit monotone and there were some mispronunciations but overall a good job. It began with a thoughtful outline of the origins of Orthodox Christian worship and then a detailed overview of each aspect of the liturgical service. It was not difficult to understand or follow. In fact, I think it should be required reading for every Orthodox Christian! A great book for those new to the faith and the faithful alike. So many little practices gradually creep into common use within church services with very little understanding of where they came from or whether they even have theological significance. This book acts as a great guide for Christians to check themselves against history and the church fathers, to see whether current practices are in line with church tradition. And, for Orthodox Christians, tradition is not something to be tampered with lightly. The point was made quite clearly, that it was the determination of the church to remain unchanging from a liturgical standpoint that has preserved the rich worship and deep theological meaning behind each service in the Orthodox Church. All in all, a wonderful book and highly recommended.
