Historia
Many people struggle to have honest conversations about race, even those who consider themselves allies or identify as anti-racist. For anyone who wants to have better, more productive discussions, Courageous Discomfort is an empowering handbook that teaches you how to do just that. In these minutes, authors (and best friends), Shanterra McBride, who is Black, and Rosalind Wiseman, who is white, discuss their own friendship and tap into their decades of anti-racism work to answer the 20 uncomfortable-but-critical questions about race they get asked most often.

Historia
Are you or your teachers frustrated with carrots and sticks, detention rooms, and suspension-antiquated school discipline practices that simply do not work with the students entering our classrooms today? Our kids have complex needs, and we must empower and embrace them with restorative practices that not only change behaviors but transform students into productive citizens, accountable for their own actions.

Hack the System Not the People
Revisado: 09-19-21
Hacking School Discipline with a restorative approach does require more time to demonstrate results, yet the investment in teaching and coaching the expected behaviors has huge dividends for the school community. The authors detail the blueprint for implementation of a restorative approach that has instant actionable steps. It’s a must read for educators. The only part I dislike is when the authors criticize current culture for emphasizing more value for entertainers and athletes over education. I think they are a little jealous and perhaps misinformed that students may feel more connected to entertainers and athletes than to educators. Otherwise, the authors have the credibility to release an amazing resource.

Historia
Sophia Chang is a badass of the music industry. As the daughter of Korean immigrants in predominantly white suburban Vancouver, she grew up shunning the “model minority” myth. Armed with a fierce sense of independence, she moved to New York City and infiltrated the world of hip-hop, yet remained mostly in the shadows of the artists she supported. With her debut memoir, Sophia Chang is finally ready to grab the mic for herself.

AWESOME
Revisado: 08-02-21
Sophia Chang’s authentic and awesome story is historical and unapologetic. I first heard her interview on Jemele Hill’s podcast. Sophia and Wu-Tang Clan are inseparable. I enjoyed reading about her family’s struggles and learning about her Korean culture. A must read for hip hop fans like me.

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Kiese’s memoir gives voice to our inner demons whom we have ignored. A must read. I can identify with his childhood experiences with psychosexual relationships and peer relationships. I am looking forward to listening to or reading his other works.

Lamar Odom shared his heartfelt story with us. I connected with his love for his family and friends. The deaths of his family members played a heavy toll on his well being. Lamar talks about mental health issues and takes full responsibility for his actions. Definitely a must read story for bball fan like me. Enjoy!

Soul Keeping
Revisado: 11-22-17
I am thankful that my friend sent me the audible link for this book. I usually do not value audible books because I like to read the actual book, book mark it, and annotate it while I am reading it. There are many "aha" moments for me. In particular, the author made references to the difference between busy-ness and being in a hurry. Jesus ministry was busy, as is our day-to-day tasks. Hurried is an external pressure that we demand of ourselves that deems unproductive and leads to unnecessary stress. There are several "aha" moments to discus; however, the critical message for me was that we need to protect the soul the Lord gave us by learning more about Him to follow His life for His believers. I recommend this book for everyone who is searching for their purpose in life as well as those who think they have life figured out. Thank you for reading my review.
