Historia
At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence.

We lost so much when he was assassinated.
Revisado: 07-15-24
The first time I read the book was when it first came out. I tearedup often. Especially when they talked about the images the Russian premier Nikita Khrushchev and President Kennedy used when they communicated secretly with each other. It was precious and moving. It was equally as moving when I listened to it on Audible..

The strength of this woman illuminates the contours of what it means to really be human. The love between her and her husband as it unfolds in the life of this woman and man was an unexpected gift but quite understandable. A must book to be acquainted with.

Historia
A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings begins as the author is entering her 30s and feeling disconnected in her life. Uneasy about her future and struggling to settle into her new house in Oxford with its own small garden, she is brought back to a time of accompanying a friend in London - a beekeeper - on his hive visits. And as a gesture of good fortune for her new life, she is given a colony of honeybees. This is a subtle yet urgent mediation on uncertainty and hope, on solitude and friendship, on feelings of restlessness and on home; on how we might better know ourselves.

Fantastic story.
Revisado: 07-08-23
It was both a very good listen and I loved how information about the Honeybee was woven seamlessly into the storyline without being intrusive but actually foundational to the story. Great performance as well by the narrator.

Historia
When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. Those questions have only grown and festered, making Pius XII one of the most controversial popes in Church history, especially now as the Vatican prepares to canonize him.

He kept the Church intact. Morally …
Revisado: 06-25-22
I gave an overall review of three because of my sadness over the moral failure that was exercised at the highest levels during that historical period. I share that view with the author of this book. The presentation and historical data was excellent. Was he a success? Yes and no. Depending on what you value … you will come down on one side more than the other. I will not judge his individual morality as I am incapable of that. That lies in the hands of the Divine not mine.

Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones.

Don’t Miss One.
Revisado: 11-23-21
Simply a great and well grounded work addressing the state of our mutually shared world today. I would add heavy on the word mutually. Why? If you are traveling through life … whether you are a Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, or someone who is agnostic … this work is a wake-up call to open our eyes and really see the world. Like this book “really seeing” changes one. A very life affirming, a life enriching and a life-giving book.

Historia
To everyone else, John F. Kennedy Jr. may have been American royalty, but to RoseMarie Terenzio, he was an entitled nuisance—and she wasn’t afraid to let him know it. RoseMarie was his personal assistant, his publicist, and one of his closest confidantes during the last five years of his life. In this, her first memoir, she bravely recounts her own fairy tale interrupted, describing the unlikely friendship between a blue-collar girl from the Bronx and John F. Kennedy Jr.

Fun for a diversion from my typical reading.
Revisado: 10-25-21
While the subject matter of JFK Jr., his wife, and his chief of staff / assistant / receptionist / gifted and a quick learner young woman … who was totally different in terms of her background, upbringing and lifestyle from his… was interesting … because I do not and never have moved in that circle of society … the book and bio was diversionary. But that does not mean her life story was not interesting, nor her background not full of significance and meaning. I enjoyed the change of pace the book afforded. Which is why I bought it. Given my age I remember his salute as a little boy and I can remember feeling terribly sad at the news of his plane going down. And so I was glad I read it. I valued her openness to her good looking male friend and his lifestyle. I also appreciated her value and care for her parents whom I could understand quite easily.

Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again. He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

At 14, Richard Holloway left his home in the Vale of Leven, north of Glasgow, and travelled hundreds of miles to be educated and trained for the priesthood by a religious order in an English monastery. By 25, he had been ordained and was working in the slums of Glasgow. Throughout the following 40 years, Richard touched the lives of many people in the Church and in the wider community. But behind his confident public face lay a restless, unquiet heart and a constantly searching mind.

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Revisado: 10-02-21
I don’t even know what possessed me to purchase this book as it was an impulse acquisition because the topic and description interested me. It was well written, had a very definite point to get across. You kind of take a chance with the author also being the reader of the book. But she did a magnificent job with both tasks. This is a keeper and I plan to gift this to a couple of other people.

Historia
On June 17, 2015, 12 members of the historically black Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina welcomed a young white man to their evening Bible study. He arrived with a pistol, 88 bullets, and hopes of starting a race war. Dylann Roof’s massacre of nine innocents during their closing prayer horrified the nation. In Grace Will Lead Us Home, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jennifer Berry Hawes provides a definitive account of the tragedy’s aftermath.

Revisado: 01-27-20
The first few chapters are very hard as they walk you through the horrible tragedy that befell the nation and especially the people of Mother Emmanuel. But this book also highlights the potential and dignity that each human life has the opportunity to embody within its particular existence.
