Gut wrenching but necessary read
Revisado: 01-23-25
It boggles the mind to think we humans are capable of such inhumane behavior towards each other. We must summon the courage necessary to speak up for what’s right. Not be silenced out of fear of offending.

Thought it would be good...
Revisado: 05-11-24
The first book was entertaining, I enjoyed the Irish humor and way of speaking.... So I gave the second book a go. Painful. It sounded as if it were written by a seventh grade girl and narrated by an Anime actor. I couldn't go on. The characters were stereotypical, one dimensional and predictable. What happened??

Richard Armitage is phenomenal!
Revisado: 01-24-24
I’m a huge fan of Agatha Christie and have listened to numerous audiobooks but Richard Armitage’s narration is by far the BEST. His calm, clear voice, his cadence, his interpretations of characters spot on makes this production one I will definitely listen to again. HIGHLY recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

James Fenimore Cooper was the most popular American writer of his day, but today he is best known for The Last of the Mohicans. A part of his Leatherstocking Tales, The Last of the Mohicans takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War, when France and England battled for control of the American and Canadian colonies.

The raw depiction of life and survival
Revisado: 01-03-24
I’m determined to listen to all 5 books in the Leather stocking tails.
Did people really speak like that? This unabridged version was good but the narrator was at times too monotone and sounded like Nick Offerman. Tbh, tiresome. Nonetheless, the story was spellbinding and so unlike the Hollywood movie I had to know what JFC’s story was really about.

Historia
The Deerslayer is the first of the Leatherstocking Tales of James Fenimore Cooper. Here we meet Natty Bumppo as a young man living in upstate New York in the early 1740s. The action begins as Bumppo, called "Deerslayer", and his friend Hurry Harry approach Lake Glimmerglass, or Oswego, where the trapper Thomas Hutter lives with his daughters, the beautiful Judith and the feeble-minded Hetty. Hutter's floating log fort is attacked by Iroquois Indians, and the two frontiersmen join in the fight.

A glimpse into the past
Revisado: 12-30-23
Listening, instead of reading permitted me to imagine more vividly what JFC intended to portray in this story. I would have struggled with the accents and pronunciations. The narrator did a fine job distinguishing between the characters.
I appreciated the historical context through the lens of his time and not our current pc. It’s no wonder The Deerslayer has remained a favorite.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Huge disappointment
Revisado: 07-01-22
Apart from one very entertaining paragraph about rowers and their quirks, this story was a huge disappointment. Painfully similar to Harry Potter stories. The poor, misunderstood genius prodigies Calvin and Elizabeth, who were kept down by the muggles… or in this case, non science folk, or jealous men or clergy, or teachers, or coworkers…
It had the depth of a poorly translated Japanese anime drama, maybe in part to the narration, but I doubt that. The “perfect woman in every way” who faced unbelievable challenges was more believable in Outlander. To sum it up, it was a feminist’s fantasy, a hodgepodge of woke drivel and I felt relieved when I decided not to finish it.

Historia
Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. She was five years old, her parents had recently split, and suddenly, she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment, she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees.

Bees 10 Story 3
Revisado: 05-05-20
As a beekeeper, I really wanted to love this book. I can completely understand why bees and the grandfather with his honey bus saved this girl, but jeeeeeze, the mother and grandmother were such losers and the performance was annoying. The narrator sounded like a voice from a Japanese anime, kind of snarky, lacking depth. The author's descriptions were vivid, I'll give her that.

We took turns reading this classic out loud growing up. To have it be narrated by his great, great grandson while I’m busy preparing for Christmas is a delightful gift I give to myself!
God bless us everyone!
