Historia
In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel de La Cruz, affectionately called Big Angel, has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But as the party approaches, his mother, nearly 100, dies herself, leading to a farewell doubleheader in a single weekend. Among the guests is Big Angel's half-brother, known as Little Angel, who must reckon with the truth that although he shares a father with his siblings, he has not, as a half gringo, shared a life. Across two bittersweet days in their San Diego neighborhood, the revelers mingle.

It’s Not Bad; It’s Not Great
Revisado: 03-07-25
It took me a bit to get into this book. I attribute that to two things:
1. There are a lot of characters to track.
2. It’s a look into a culture I’m not overly familiar with and frankly am not invested in. I didn’t truly care about the characters.
But about midway through, it clicked with me. I finally cared about the people in the story.
However, it’s not a book I would need to read or listen to again. And it’s not because it’s a bad story. I feel like it just doesn’t stand out for me. I may change my mind after I sit with it for a bit. If I do, I’ll come back and amend my review.
The narration is excellent, though, which does help. Obviously the writer reading his own work is not a given success, but in this case it is. That helped me to keep going.

The Irish-American story, with all its twists and triumphs, is told through the improbable life of one man. A dashing young orator during the Great Famine of the 1840s, in which a million of his Irish countrymen died, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony. He escaped and six months later was heralded in the streets of New York - the revolutionary hero, back from the dead, at the dawn of the great Irish immigration to America.

I really wanted to like this book. I’ve read some of his others and they were fantastic. This one is just too much into minutia for my preference. I tried to return it, but it seems I paid my money for it rather than using a credit. So it’s mine to keep. Maybe sometime down the road I will be able to finish it.

Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

I’m Glad I Finally Listened
Revisado: 01-19-24
Fascinating life written in the style of the day. I would likely have lost interest if I tried to read it from a book.
Others have mentioned how annoying the reader was and that he read too fast. I agree the reading was very fast, but I think that’s how it was produced, not how it was read. I slowed it way down - 75%. I almost never do that; I usually speed it up.
But my complaint is the reader was somewhat “high-and-mighty.” He had a supercilious manner about him. But, persevere, oh reader! 🤣

Historia
Lurking beneath the progressive activism and sex positivity in the 1970 to '80s, a dark undercurrent of violence rippled across the American landscape. With reported cases of sexual assault and homicide on the rise, the FBI created a specialized team - the “Mindhunters”, better known as the Behavioral Science Unit - to track down the country's most dangerous criminals. And yet narrowing down a seemingly infinite list of potential suspects seemed daunting at best and impossible at worst - until Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess stepped on the scene.

Good Read/Listen
Revisado: 05-24-23
Good story. I think it warrants a second listen down the road. The narrator is almost excellent. As others have written, it’s good to learn about the program from Ann Burgess’ side.
And publication is recent enough that the author addresses the strange paradigm of serial killers becoming celebrities.

Such a Sad Story
Revisado: 04-11-22
It’s not the kind of story that one can actually “enjoy.” But it is worth listening to.
It’s well-written, mostly well-narrated, and has a good pace. The reason I give only four stars for “Performance” and “Overall,” is because at times the audio is a little uneven. Voice recordings are played, but are not the best quality and not adjusted up so that the listener can have the benefit of hearing what’s said easily. I needed to rewind a few times and turn the volume up for some of those recordings.
Overall, though, I highly recommend this pod.

In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls". While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying chapters in modern American history.

So Much…a Survivor
Revisado: 02-01-22
To think the child she was endured so much is heartbreaking and maddening. I’m a few years younger than the author and I’m not sure how much of what I remember came from current events of the day or from reading about it later, but I hadn’t heard most details she provided.
She has overcome a great deal and has dug deep to provide us her story. I hope it’s not for our entertainment but for our education. This should be a cautionary tale for parents and anyone else responsible for children/teens. It’s big bad world if you’re not careful.
To note: it’s very sexually explicit in some places, but I don’t think there’s a way to tell the story without involving the sexual abuse she survived.

Now a classic of true crime, Victim is a compelling and tragic look at how lives can be changed forever by a random act of violence. During an armed robbery, several hostages were brutally tortured, shot in the head, and left for dead. Victim focuses on the members of one family - including a mother who died after the attack and a son who was left barely alive - as they fought for his survival and struggled to rebuild their lives.

Almost Unbelievable
Revisado: 01-29-22
I hadn’t heard this story before very recently. And I had to check and re-check to confirm it was not fiction. The facts are almost unbelievable. But, it’s not fiction.
Everybody should at least know the victim’s side of a story. Mostly we don’t hear of their immediate suffering or years of struggle after a crime. Usually we read about the perpetrators. And that’s valid, too. But this book tells one boy’s story in painstaking detail for the first few months after the event that changed so many lives. And the story follows the family for years after, though, of course, not in such detail.
The book is well written and I’m glad I “read” it. But in this format and with this narrator, I really had to stop when POV changed. It’s abrupt and was confusing until I figured out what was happening.
I don’t think the reader does the book any favors. He is somewhat melodramatic and almost noir, a tad uneven at times. It distracted me from the words.
I’d still suggest the book to anyone who asked. It’s just as relevant today.
