Historia
Having jeopardized their careers in an unauthorized investigation that threatened to reveal the corruption in South Africa's halls of power, Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido have been demoted from the elite Hawks police unit. While waiting to be transferred from Cape Town to seemingly mundane duty in Stellenbosch, Griessel receives a disturbing, anonymous letter: "I can only trust you and Captain Cupido. There is an adder in our bosom. Be careful of phone calls."

Cliché and Dull
Revisado: 05-22-22
This was undoubtedly an attempt by the author to demystify and humanize a community in South Africa that is known for its arrogance, opulence and racism. That aside, the plot is decent and so to the storytelling. However, the unnuanced state capture narrative and implicit anti-Zuma rhetoric makes for a sour reading experience. If that’s not bad enough, the narration is awful! The narrator’s accents and pronunciations are cringe. After reading his previous book which was almost as disappointing, perhaps it’s time to give this author a break.

He paints her not as a missing person but a wayward wife — until a gruesome piece of evidence turns the investigation criminal. While Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas pursues the story and M.E. Claire Washburn harbors theories that run counter to the SFPD’s, ADA Yuki Castellano sizes Lucas up as a textbook domestic offender...who suddenly puts forward an unexpected suspect.

Why are Throwaways Substituted by Trash
Revisado: 06-05-21
To think that this is the 21st book in the series and it has degenerated to this nonsense, it’s actually extremely sad. The protagonist, Lindsey, was more complex and intriguing as a character in the first 3 to 5 books and since the 10th book or so, she became quite simplistic and one dimensional just like her bimbo friends barring the medical examiner. But then again, Claire doesn’t get to play much of a role apart from being hard-working and depressed. This particular book is dull, unentertaining and A poor attempt of a whodunnit. What makes it worse, is the fact that the falsely accused character ends up dying and the injustice of it all is not adequately underscored. It’s quite shameful that experienced authors need to be told that it is morally reprehensible to have such a dampener towards the end of the book and that the characters lacked the insight and ability to address it properly. Aside from the poorly crafted plot and cringed dialogue, ultimately, this is a book with a host of white characters living in a white world. The authors could not even add nuanced perspectives through the use of the two characters who are black and Japanese. If anything, they’re just as lilly white as the rest of the cast. This book is best recommended for narrow-minded people who are looking for affirmations and certainty about a world that they are all too familiar with.

A Good and Tragic Story to Tell
Revisado: 08-20-20
If there were a 3.5 button to rate this book, that would've been more appropriate. However, hopefully, the law of averages will settle the score and perhaps other reviewers will be more generous. There were minor issues with the audio file. It appears that the editer/producer missed some obvious mistakes. The fact that the narrator mispronounces some of the Nguni and Sotho phrases, including the bland accents, does little in masking the errors. This thus makes the listening experience rather ordinary at best and annoying at worst for those few moments. In terms of the writing, the author clearly spent time researching this topic. Consequently, she gives a very realistic, heart-wrenching and colourful outlook on Johannesburg. The characters are simple, but, their diversity makes for an intricate understanding of the human experience in this young and vibrant metropolis. It is quite disappointing that she merely hints at the politics. Due to the lack of a character that is intellectually stimulating, the reader is treated to a limited understanding of The history, economics and cultures of this region. A person might even think, because of the simplemindedness of most of the characters, that the author has a skewed view of the politics of the day. With that said, the book is definitely worth a read for it is entertaining in a genre fiction way.
