The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

I didn’t see the warnings and regret wasting credit
Revisado: 10-07-22
Vaguely unpleasant collection of torture scenes, rape and abuse scenes. The book couldn’t make up its mind which genre it fell into. Bits of paranormal/haunted house, bits of murder mystery bits of romance and much too much rape and abuse. I got bored with the extended rape scene after what seemed hours of description of abuse and rape by a murderous stalker. Which, by the way, the vacuous ‘heroine’ is turned on by. Female narrator does a good job; male less good, every word is spat out with emphasis and over acted.

This is a story about bad people who do good things and good people who do bad things. A coming of age story with a difference. I couldn’t stop listening. Excellent narrator too. I can’t wait to read Kirsty Ferguson’s next book.

Good story and excellent narrator
Revisado: 03-20-22
This story had an original theme and is well written with interesting characters. The narrator was excellent- I thought she did a great job with playing the different characters. I saw there had been some negative reviews on the narrator - I can’t understand this as I thought she did a great job! Possibly a different narrator?

Revisado: 03-11-22
Really enjoyed this book / Joanne Harris’s writing is wonderfully evocative, the characters and the backdrop of school and home carefully drawn and the plot intricate. Another masterpiece from Joanne; up there with Chocolat!

Historia
Appearances can be deceptive; but the truth is a dangerous thing.... On the night Brian Bishop murdered his wife he was sixty miles away, asleep in bed at the time. At least that's the way it looks to Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, who is called in to investigate the kinky slaying of beautiful socialite, Katie Bishop. Roy Grace soon starts coming to the conclusion that Bishop has performed the apparently impossible feat of being in two places at once.

Good story but a bit obvious
Revisado: 03-01-22
I quite enjoyed this book but found the thread of misogyny constantly irritating. It feels very dated: women are seen mainly in terms of physical attributes. And the descriptions of dead(female) bodies are quite detailed and a bit grisly. I’m guessing the author is a chap of a ‘certain age’. The narrator did a good job apart from the occasional error.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 01-24-22
Great story with well researched and fascinating historical detail. The narrator was brilliant - I usually find a man reading a woman’s part pretty unconvincing , but David Thorpe read an enormous variety of characters with ease, and really made me picture the scene . Really recommend this book!

Kept me guessing to the end
Revisado: 06-28-21
This book exceeded my expectations. The author clearly has some knowledge of psychosis - having had family members suffer from this, the blending of reality and delusion, with associated paranoia, it is a convincing and sensitive portrait. The other aspect of this is the supernatural phenomena- could not stop listening!

Interesting twist on a classic haunted house story
Revisado: 05-29-21
I’m very pleased to have discovered this author. The idea of portraying not just one family, but several families in crisis, since the house was built, was something different. I found many of the characters likeable, though flawed as we all are. Sometimes I found the skipping between time periods a little confusing - you do have to concentrate on this one! Narration was excellent.

Great story
Revisado: 05-22-21
Another great gothic novel from Wendy Webb. Kept me enthralled throughout; and the ending still left some questions unanswered! A sequel needed?
Narration was fine, apart from the jarring attempts at what I think was supposed to be a Scottish accent, which were quite annoying.
