Historia
To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

Unrealistic
Revisado: 02-06-25
Cassie in no way is portrayed as a university professor with teaching and research interests. She seems far younger than her real age. Abused women are common, but she is ridiculous. She sounds mindless, focused on a man only. The beginning has me confused as well. I was only able to finish the book because there is enough tension to keep it going. Reads like a romance of the most unfeminist kind.

Stereotypes
Revisado: 11-20-24
As a 40-year resident of Maine, I was offended by the use of all the clichés about the state and its people. The novel read like a first book by the author. Very disappointed. The reader sounded like he was parodying Mainers and the state.

The Best and Most Typical King
Revisado: 10-08-23
I expected nothing less and got a lot more. Getting very suspicious of Holly, even suspicious of author’s post-novel comments. Maybe I’m too much of a fan of Anthony Horowitz, but King is his equal. I’m referring less to narrative style and more to technique. Agility in shifting the discourse in a single sentence or word, to make the reader doubt her previous interpretations, is perhaps one of King’s less-perceived talents. A writer must be an addicted reader to get to that slippery state of genre (not gender) fluidity. Like her creator, I too would like to get closer to Holly, so fingers crossed that she has a future life, no matter what her profession.

Well-structured, well-performed. Great plot. Want to read more by this author. The cultural perspective iss nicely presented and used to fool the reader, too.

When Ann Stilwell arrives in New York City, she expects to spend her summer working as a curatorial associate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Instead, she finds herself assigned to The Cloisters, a gothic museum and garden renowned for its medieval art collection and its group of enigmatic researchers studying the history of divination. Angry all the way through
Revisado: 06-08-23
I had to read this for a mystery group. Even though I am a museum goer, a translator, and have other things in common with Ann, I couldn’t stand her. Leo is just as bad morally. Oddly enough, Rachel is the best-written character. They are all narcissistic, running around with tarot cards few believe in. Their work seemed secondary. Plot is way over-written, seems author couldn’t find a good ending. Ann ends up transformed into a hard, self-serving woman although she was subservient to Leo for a long time. I don’t like being so negative, but this book was for me a waste of time and money.

Turmeric
Revisado: 01-22-22
One of the annoying things was calling turmeric a potion ingredient and dangerous. Turmeric - not pronounced like the reader does - is a healthy ingredient of many countries’ cuisine. It is not rare, even in the US. It even grows in Maine. This undermined the plot line as related to past ritualistic practices.
The plot is structured in a way very similar to the previous novel.
I will try #3, hoping things improve from decent to very good.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 12-14-21
In 2021 I didn’t expect to find such a male-empowered novel. And while there are people who complain about law enforcement nowadays, the total absence of any legal response to domestic abuse is not realistic. Nor is the response of Vanessa’s family. This was out of the fifties.
The author’s best feature is keeoing the narrative moving.

The Art of Is contains breath-of-fresh-air thinking about how to cultivate the kind of game-changing creativity everyone seeks. Stephen Nachmanovitch shows exactly how the passion and immediacy of improvisation can be cultivated and how, in fact, we all improvise all the time - whether we are driving or deep in conversation.

Reader? Plot?
Revisado: 04-26-21
The reader made the main character of 42 sound like a teenager. The singsong intonation came up sometimes.
The plot didn’t move things along, although I stuck with it. There was also some unnecessary swearing that threw scenes off.
The setting was great, however.
