Historia
Feyre has undergone more trials than one human woman can carry in her heart. Though she’s now been granted the powers and lifespan of the High Fae, she is haunted by her time Under the Mountain and the terrible deeds she performed to save the lives of Tamlin and his people. As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre’s hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different people: one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin.

Characters are more developed than in the first book of the series. I finished this one and put the rest of the series in my queue immediately. I did not care for this narrator and the nasally voice she gave to one of the key characters.

Historia
In a working-class town in a county west of London, a schoolgirl scribbles stories in the back pages of her exercise book, intoxicated by the first sparks of her imagination. As she grows, everything and everyone she encounters become fuel for a burning talent. The large Russian man in the ancient maroon car who careens around the grocery store where she works as a checkout clerk, and slips her a copy of Beyond Good and Evil. The growing heaps of other books in which she loses–and finds–herself. Even the derailing of a friendship, in a devastating violation.

A strange story. Yes. That’s right. But beautiful writing. Once I sat back and stopped trying to follow every incongruous thread and simply let the words wash over me like poetry I enjoyed the experience a lot more.

Historia
Anne Elliot, daughter of the snobbish Sir Walter Elliot, is woman of quiet charm and deep feelings. Eight years before our story begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret.

Meh.
Revisado: 01-22-23
Austen is among my very favorites. I must have missed that this was an abridged version before I bought it, which was very disappointing. I would have preferred a straight reading of the work over the more dramatized version recorded here with sound overlays, etc. No doubt many will like it, but it is not to my tastes.

Historia
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Interesting story about a well known actress with less known talents. A bit melodramatic for my tastes, both in the writing and in the reading.

Do you hate the term “middle age?” So does Kristin van Ogtrop, who is still trying to come up with a less annoying way to describe those years when you find yourself both satisfied and outraged, confident and confused, full of appreciation but occasional disdain for the world around you.

Revisado: 01-09-23
As a woman of a certain age, Kristin gets all the things exactly right. Her take on life is extremely relatable. Her reading of her work is ok. She doesn’t get the cadence and inflections just right. I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the hard copy.

Historia
A mid-century doctor's raw, unvarnished account of his own descent into madness, and his daughter's attempt to piece his life back together and make sense of her own. Texas-born and Harvard-educated, Dr. Perry Baird was a rising medical star in the late 1920s and 1930s. Early in his career, ahead of his time, he grew fascinated with identifying the biochemical root of manic depression, just as he began to suffer from it himself.

Heartbreaking glimpse into the life of a bipolar man in the 1940s
Revisado: 05-12-22
Ms. Baird’s extensive research through her father’s papers as a way to get to know him after his death in a way she was never able to in life sketches out a troubled life, revealing horrifying conditions of treatment of the mentally ill in the 1940s. Fascinating and heartbreaking by turns, Ms. Baird’s book braids together her memories, her father’s account of his time in and out of mental hospitals, and the medical records of said hospitals to create a multi-dimensional story and vivid insight into life with mental illness. The book is good, the audio recording features three narrators, one of whom was too over-dramatic for my tastes.

Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Revisado: 09-25-21
An epic story of life, death, friendship, perseverance, and failings, wonderfully read. Our comfortable world today obfuscates the danger that past generations took for granted. This book is a testament to that spirit that looked danger and death in the face and pushed on.
This is an older recording, so it is not as polished as some of the newer recordings. There are many reviews that complain about that and about the narrator’s voice. After a handful of chapters, I was so pulled into the story and enthralled with Horsley’s ability differentiate his voice for the dozens of characters that I can’t imagine listening to the rest of the series without his performance. I loved this book and am so saddened to finish it.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.
