Drawing on decades of work that has helped expand our understanding of what it means to be human and what we all need to do to help build a better world, The Book of Hope touches on vital questions, including: How do we stay hopeful when everything seems hopeless? How do we cultivate hope in our children? What is the relationship between hope and action? Filled with moving and inspirational stories and photographs from Jane’s remarkable career, The Book of Hope is a deeply personal conversation with one of the most beloved figures in the world today.

Jane Goodall is a World Treasure
Revisado: 10-08-24
The story Jane tells and her message of hope are inspiring and compelling. Her sweet and gently energetic voice convey both her wisdom and depth. Jarring, however, is the interviewer, who interrupts this beautiful narrative with interjections of his own uninteresting opinions. Worse, however, is his voice. I double checked the description at first because he sounds just like AI. No kidding. Mechanical and impersonal voice; and almost as an insult, he interrupts sweet Jane's stories with a loud "she said" truly in the middle of her sentences. That may have worked on paper, but on audio it is truly horrible. Worth a read maybe but skip the audio unless you can figure out how to only hear Jane Goodall. She is a world treasure.

Historia
Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

Yawwwwwwnnnnn
Revisado: 08-15-24
Ill brave through most literature, but wow! This was just incredibly boring and trite. And the reader's clipped and sardonic whilst being saccharin sweet, style made it unbearable. Almost made it to the end, but then i said "life is too short and there are too many great books to suffer through this".

Lovely but boring
Revisado: 03-19-24
The performed partially redeemed a very weak plot. The characters were less than interesting and by the end you wish they would all just disappear. The book lead June likes something big going to happen but it never does.

Decent story but tedious
Revisado: 03-02-24
Started out interesting, but became tedious and tiresome the longer it went. Kind of depressing. Reader was pretty good. Wish I could get my credit back.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

A great Victorian novel
Revisado: 09-04-23
This is a great novel by a wonderful author. I enjoyed it immensely, mainly because of the excellent performance by Juliet Stevenson. I have started selecting audiobooks with her name in the Search rather than an author, as I know they will be enjoyable to hear.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Exemplary Performance!
Revisado: 08-17-23
The performance of an audiobook is so important. Recently, I have listened to some wonderful stories unfortunately performed by readers who seemed very disengaged and uninterested. Let me contrast that with the narration of Juliet Stevenson. Her voice, accents, nuances, and engagement in this story left me feeling as though I had just witnessed a play with many different actors. You begin to recognize a character the moment she begins speaking, forgetting totally that it is one person. And, of course, this story, North and South, has all of the pastoral drama of any of Jane Austen’s most popular works. Elizabeth Gaskell was an incredibly gifted author, who shared glimpses of 1850’s industrial England with the gratuitous clash of the classes, yet personal and heartfelt, and engaging. Highly recommend

Paula Power, the daughter of a wealthy railway magnate, inherits De Stancy Castle, an ancient castle in need of modernization. She commissions a young architect from London, George Somerset, to undertake the work. Somerset falls in love with Paula. But Paula, the Laodicean of the title, meaning a person who is lukewarm or halfhearted, is torn between George's admiration and that of Captain De Stancy, whose old-world romanticism contrasts with Somerset's forward-looking outlook.

Poor narration
Revisado: 08-10-23
This is a newly discovered Thomas Hardy book, as I thought I had read them all. It is not Hardy at his best, but is a very nice story. However, the narration is truly awful. At first, I stopped listening, because I thought it was some kind of computer reading the story. Later, I picked it back up and got into the story enough to make it through to the end. But truly, this reader ruined it. How do people like that get these jobs?

Historia
Mildred Pierce had gorgeous legs, a way with a skillet, and a bone-deep core of toughness and determination. She used those attributes to survive a divorce in 1940s America with two children and to claw her way out of poverty, becoming a successful businesswoman. But Mildred also had two weaknesses: a yen for shiftless men and an unreasoning devotion to her monstrous daughter.

Wait, no murder?
Revisado: 08-01-23
Like many people, I am a Joan Crawford fan and have watched this movie many times. I also watched the Kate Winslet version, not nearly as good. Just now listened to the original story, which was truly enjoyable. No wonder it’s a classic. However, I kept wondering when the murder would happen. It never did! I guess it’s creative license… anyway, the reader does an excellent job. I’m pretty picky about this, but Christine Williams does an excellent job of portraying many characters, and also the mood for each scene. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Discouraging
Revisado: 02-05-23
I found this book, while no doubt well researched and skillfully written, discouraging from a Christian point of view. I don’t want to know why every single detail of the history of Israel and of Jesus isn’t plausible or even probable. I get it. Detail by detail is gleefully disputed. But it can’t possibly be encouraging to Christians or Jews. it may be endorsing to non believers. I listened to the entire book and the reader us great. Just felt it was discouraging to my faith and belief system.
