Historia
As a doctor, I walk a dangerously delicate balance of being compassionate but not overly invested. The same is true in my personal life - love is a luxury I can’t afford. It isn’t until Dr. Westin Grant breaks down all my walls and offers me a future, I find myself wondering if I’m brave enough to risk my heart. When who I was and who I’ve tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

Get therapy!
Revisado: 12-29-21
So many old, worn out tropes: doctor as god, a woman who likes a controlling man. The old boyfriend is an abusive, self-centered jerk who should have been kicked to the curb immediately. I thought that the romance genre was trying to get past its misogynist tendencies. The heroine spent 14 years in a love gone wrong emotional spiral over a guy who wanted her to drop her family in the face of her mother's slow, painful death from cancer. Her family and friends all watched it and no one recommended therapy?! Wow!
The narration was okay, except that the hero sounded like Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island.

Great story
Revisado: 12-28-21
I love Christopher Paul Curtis' works, and Bucking the Sarge is a good example of why. The story keeps the reader guessing about what will happen next and it is fun to read/listen. The characters are drawn and developed as multi-faceted and even the least sympathetic have reasons for their behavior.
The narration contributed well to the story.

Perfect in every way
Revisado: 12-28-21
Grace Lin has the magical ability to make the reader feel like they are somehow inside the story. There were also some cultural "ahas" such as the reasons behind some of the common themes in Chinese illustrations and figurines, such as the laughing, pink-cheeked twins and the boy on the water buffalo.
Janet Song's narration was perfect, and perhaps contributed to the feeling that I was inside the story.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

I wanted the story to go on forever
Revisado: 12-28-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how the characters developed. The only thing that disappointed me about the story was that I knew how it would end, so I was was depressed for the last few chapters because I could see everything being tied up with a neat little bow, and therefore knew the end was coming.
The narrator was mostly excellent, but mispronounced a few words, which was mildly distracting.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Loved it in the end
Revisado: 12-28-21
Wonderful story and excellent narrator. However, there were too many characters to keep track of in audiobook format and I had a hard time keeping track of who was who for about the first half of the book. I'm going to have to listen again. Perhaps this would be better read in hard copy.

I loved how Mr. Ma intertwined the narrative with his music. The love he had for his parents shines through and he still shows a little bit of his mischievous side.
