Historia
Forty years after the God Wars, Dresediel Lex bears the scars of liberation - especially in the Skittersill, a poor district still bound by the fallen gods' decaying edicts. As long as the gods' wards last, they strangle development; when they fail, demons will be loosed upon the city. The King in Red hires Elayne Kevarian of the Craft firm Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to fix the wards, but the Skittersill's people have their own ideas. A protest rises against Elayne's work, led by Temoc, a warrior-priest turned community organizer....

prequels bore me
Revisado: 05-15-20
loved the first four books, but this one lacked narrative drive. never felt like I was getting to the bottom of anything very interesting. I wasn't very invested in the characters. I am biased insofar as I have never enjoyed prequels.

Historia
This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

unfocused, jejune
Revisado: 02-03-18
the story lacked a clear antagonist or a clear challenge for the protagonist (at least not one that was advanced properly). the worst was kvothe's love interest. Denna herself is basically a manic pixie dream girl. she's not entirely useless or feeble, but she is awfully fickle and mysterious in a trite way. but, holy crap, kvothe's feelings for her are rendered in the stupidest possible language. kvothe is an idiot for his inability to understand her very obvious signals, even her explicit words. I guess you can forgive a fifteen year old, but the retrospective framing of the narrative makes the lack of awareness really grating to read.

Historia
FitzChivalry - royal bastard and former king’s assassin - has left his life of intrigue behind. As far as the rest of the world knows, FitzChivalry Farseer is dead and buried. Masquerading as Tom Badgerlock, Fitz is now married to his childhood sweetheart, Molly, and leading the quiet life of a country squire. Though Fitz is haunted by the disappearance of the Fool, who did so much to shape Fitz into the man he has become, such private hurts are put aside in the business of daily life, at least until the appearance of menacing, pale-skinned strangers casts a sinister shadow over Fitz’s past...and his future.

Filled with dross, predictable, irritating
Revisado: 03-10-15
I've enjoyed all the fitz and fool books, but this one was the worst. Lots of useless wool gathering from the main characters makes the plot drag on. The main character is supposed to be clever, but the answer to the central mystery if the latter half of the book is very clear, which would be totally fine if Fitz had some inkling of it. Instead, the reader is chafed by his idiotic failure to observe the obvious. Toward the end he makes a mistake that is at least somewhat believable, but this mistake combines with to his insane ignorance of the mystery to make for a twist ending that feels totally unearned.
If the book were shorter, it wild be easier to forgive the clumsy writing. As it is, I was very disappointed.
