Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Excellent moving forward and backward in time without confusion for the reader.
Revisado: 11-16-24
Intiguing story, excellent narrators.Well written, good flow. There were always a lot of viable options for how it would end, do kept my interest.
The one thing that kept making me want to stop listening or fast forward was the endless repetition of the point being made. I got the point the first time it was made - less than halfway through - and I felt bombarded by the verbal messaging that the story itself made crystal clear. If I had begun with a negative opinion about transgender issues, I would have shut the book and not learned the things that I was able to learn, that were worth learning, in the rest of the book. The story itself was the teacher. But I wonder if the storytelling was overshadowed by the messaging.

LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis is a fine homicide detective, but when he needs to get into the mind of a killer, he leans on the expertise of his best friend, the brilliant psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware. While Sturgis has a knack for piecing together the details of a crime, Delaware can decipher the darkest intents driving the most vicious of perpetrators. And there’s no better place for the doctor’s analytical skills to shine than a rowdy hall full of young men and women intoxicated on life and lust...and suddenly faced with the specter of death.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Riveting. Even the 2nd time
Revisado: 06-07-23
John Grisham is a master beyond compare. His stories are compelling and listen-friendly. Sycamore Row effectively evokes a dual time&place, and connects the dots slowly and addictively.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Only Barbara Kingsolver
Revisado: 11-11-22
Only Barbara Kingsolver can handle this much grief without breaking the reader. So human, painful, personal, shedding light on a real darkness - darknesses. Kingsolver is a master of redemptive literature.
Charlie Thurston as narrator is so perfect in this long and evolving first person saga that the sound of his reading is addictive. Yes, a dark pun, but true.

Working as a quality-assurance grunt in the gaming industry sounds like fun, right? You get to play the coolest new games before anyone else. And all you have to do is to find, reproduce, and report bugs before the last pixel is locked in and the games are launched to an eager public. Sure, there’s the unpaid overtime, the office politics, and the ever-present threat of layoffs. But you get to game!

Plot arcs & character development...who needs 'em?
Revisado: 10-11-22
LOTS of in-depth technical details that felt like I was being read technical manuals 99% of the time and there was practically 0 plot arc nor character development. I valiantly listened until the "climax" (which happened at about 15-20 minutes from the end) since I was hoping that it would all magically come together somehow in some brilliant and unexpected way.
Spoiler Alert: it didn't. I finally gave up with about 10 minutes remaining.
The voice actors/narrators, however, did an amazing job with the material that they were given which is the only reason I didn't give this 1 star overall.
Glad nothing was lost but my time. However, I wish I hadn't used my time on this one. Live and learn I suppose! If you have free time to listen to a book, then I would suggest looking for a different one.

Not your "Half-listen-at-the-Gym" Fantasy Fic
Revisado: 09-13-22
Love this author and this narrator! I have enjoyed them before.
I want to caution that this isn't a casual "easy listening" fiction or fantasy fiction. With all of the creative names and places, complex narratives, and intertwining plots it is very intricate. Definitely a sit and listen rather than your "go-to-the-gym" audiobook.
Well done so far! I like this addition to the series. Can't wait to see if the third book holds up.
