One of my favorites, but narration is a dud

I have a high regard for this book after first reading it a few decades ago. Thought about re-reading, and decided listening was a good option. However, not a fan of the performance in this instance.

I do really enjoy aspects of this story. It's an interesting look back and I've found it surprisingly relevant re-reading it all these years later.

I was hopeful this would be entertaining, but I found myself more annoyed with the protagonist than anything else. There were a lot of likeable parts of the story, but I found myself suspending disbelief a lot, which took me out of the action. I know it's supposed to be fiction, but it left something to be desired. I'm going to chalk my displeasure up to this book just not being for me. I think a younger reader might find it very enjoyable.

So, performance-wise this was a fine book. However, I couldn't really get into the story, and found the POV of the school shooter frustrating as it really seemed to be trying to justify actions. Did not finish.

I loved it, but saved it for entirely daylight hours. It really pulls you in.

I got this book expecting a funny and irreverent romp through some good stories. It was that and so much more. This book covers a myriad of topics each of them taken up with a level of honesty I expected to be tempered with a lot of comedy. This was the case, but there were also a lot of serious moments she didn't just gloss over to keep people smiling and laughing.

Read this book if you've watched her show, her stand-up, or her movie. Read this especially if you want to see the other side of her comedy and where it comes from.

I can't profess to loving every minute of it, but I definitely appreciate having read this book.

I'll preface this by saying that I've only listened to Life and Death on this, but I've definitely listened to Twilight a few times, even though it has been a while.

Life and Death is a good story, if you don't go into it preparing to pick it to pieces. I found it to be an amusing experience, in the same way I find alternate universe fan fiction stories fun to read. I did roll my eyes more than a few times, and there were definitely some logistical things that I don't think translated that well.

I don't think re-imagining Twilight could ever really improve on the story (at least not without some massive overhauls) so I really didn't go into this expecting much, and thankfully I wasn't disappointed. If I want fine literature, I'll go back to reading Pride and Prejudice, and be quite happy with that.

If you're looking for a different way things could have been, or a nostalgic trip back to Forks, you may find this to be the book for you. If you're looking for a story that has removed all of the sexism of the original, you probably want to give this a pass.

This is my favorite of the comedies so I'm a bit partial but you really can't go wrong with this production.

This book has several characters appearing from other books in this "universe." It would be great if they could settle on one pronunciation of the names across the board as well as the accents because they don't seem to keep them very consistent from book to book.

Outside of that, this was an entertaining listen but it's not my favorite.

It's always interesting to flesh out villains so they're not just bad for the sake of being bad but I couldn't really get behind any of the actions taking place in this book. Basically it offered some minor setup for things that happened in the other stories but fell flat everywhere else. The real highlight was the 3 chapters offered from Winter. I'm still looking forward to that book even if this one didn't really impress.

Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ?

I listened to and enjoyed the first two books in this series, so I would probably be willing to try another Veronica Roth book. Emma Galvin narrated both of those and I would listen to her in another book. I'd never listened to Aaron Stanford but he did well with narrating Tobias, female voices weren't spectacular.

Would you ever listen to anything by Veronica Roth again?

I might listen to another one of her books if the premise sounds interesting to me. I didn't love how she wrapped up this trilogy so I would proceed with caution.

Which scene was your favorite?

I didn't really enjoy any scenes in particular. The story felt like it was moving forward because it had to, stand out scenes didn't factor into that.

Could you see Allegiant being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I'm not sure if this will succeed as a movie. Considering Divergent is being released it's not inconceivable, but the story felt kind of dull and muddled so I'm not sure how it would do as a movie or as a TV show.

Any additional comments?

I was disappointed overall by this book. I enjoyed Divergent, was mostly entertained by Allegiant, but this felt like it was so different from the other books in an unexpected way. I can get behind being surprised by a story and seeing where the author takes the story, but this one has felt like it's wandering aimlessly through a world of which I want no part.
