Historia
In this brief, semi-autobiographical work, Mark Twain explores the controversy over the authorship of the Shakespearean literary canon. Applying satire, anecdote, and extensive quotation, he uses the debate over Shakespeare's real identity to satirize prejudice, intolerance, and self-importance.

Good topic, challenged reader
Revisado: 04-26-22
Fascinating topic, but the reader has a flat delivery and difficulty pronouncing words. For example “supposedly” becomes “supposably” and “argot” pronounced “argott”. Many other examples make this reading a little cringe-worthy.

Historia
For hundreds of years, the City of Light has set the stage for larger-than-life characters-from medieval lovers Heloïse and Abelard to the defiant King Henri IV to the brilliant scientist Madame Curie, beloved chanteuse Edith Piaf, and the writer Colette. In this book, Susan Cahill recounts the lives of 22 famous Parisians and then takes you through the seductive streets of Paris to the quartiers where they lived and worked: the scenes of their greatest triumphs and tragedies, their favorite cafes, bars, and restaurants, and the places where they found inspiration and love.

Loved it.
Revisado: 04-29-21
What a great way to learn about the history of Paris, through many eras and characters, including many women. Wonderfully narrated. I was so entranced with this book that I bought the printed version as well in order to ring every bit of information out of this unique book.

Good subject but flawed.
Revisado: 04-29-21
I was delighted to find a French history novel that revolves around women’s stories. But the narration is all over the map. The pronunciation of French names and places is totally inconsistent. Some authors are overwrought. And for some unknown reason when the readers speak in the first person as their characters they use horrendous fake-French-accented English, while narrating their stories in their regular American accents.

Historia
Traditionally known as a dirty, congested, and dangerous city, 19th Century Paris was transformed in an extraordinary period from 1848 to 1870, when the government launched a huge campaign to build streets, squares, parks, churches, and public buildings. The Louvre Palace was expanded, Notre-Dame Cathedral was restored and the French masterpiece of the Second Empire, the Opra Garnier, was built.

Fascinating
Revisado: 04-29-21
Fascinating and well structured. An interesting way to learn about the history of Paris through the architecture of a period. The narrator is excellent, although I listen to him at a slower (x.9) setting since he speaks very rapidly. And his French pronunciation is perfect.

Historia
This memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia Child embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.

Charming, but...
Revisado: 04-29-21
The story is charming, evocative and compelling, and the reader has a lovely voice. But French speakers will find some of her pronunciation baffling. There are basic location pronunciations such as Les Halles that a narrator of this type of book should know. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall production.

Historia
Poisoner, despot, necromancer - the dark legend of Catherine de Medici is centuries old. In this critically hailed biography, Leonie Frieda reclaims the story of this unjustly maligned queen to reveal a skilled ruler battling extraordinary political and personal odds - from a troubled childhood in Florence to her marriage to Henry, son of King Francis I of France; from her transformation of French culture to her fight to protect her throne and her sons' birthright. Based on thousands of private letters, it is a remarkable account of one of the most influential women to wear a crown.

Some great information in here, although the military campaigns I found tiresome. The reader has a lovely voice, but some very peculiar “Franglais” pronunciations of French words and names that may jar the ear of Francophones.
