A couple expecting their first child is brutally murdered. The prime suspect is the scorned ex-wife with no knowledge of how she got there or what happened. It's up to Detective Charlotte Pierce to unravel the mystery of the newlyweds’ murder. It looks like an open and shut case, but certain things are not adding up.

Book Suffers from Subpar Narration
Revisado: 08-27-22
I found the narrator for this book to be a deterrent to even finishing the book. Inflections were flat for the most part with emphasis in strange places if at all. I hit the wall when the narrator said “er” instead of “E-R” when the reference was clearly to a hospital emergency room and decided at that point if I was going to finish the book it would be by reading the Kindle edition and not by listening to the Audible rendition. Definitely not the quality narration I’ve come to expect from Audible.

I f You Want to Know How it All Ends Don’t Waste Your Time.
Revisado: 07-21-21
After dragging on for a very long time this book ended in the way that I most hate with no ending to the story leaving the reader to figure out what comes next. Maybe the author is going to do a sequel but frankly that’s not good enough for me. I would not have wasted my time slogging through the whole book had I known that I was going to run into that at the end. Whenever a book ends like that I figure it’s because the author hasn’t figured out how to end it. Kind of a cop out in my opinion.

During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

Thoughtful and Thought Provoking
Revisado: 12-19-19
I started this book with no expectations. It’s one of the few that I will probably listen to at least once more and maybe again after that. This is a well-crafted book with an incredibly important message. Be prepared to find yourself looking inward as you experience the characters and their issues, challenges, and rising levels of self-awareness. I highly recommend it.

Okay Beginning and End, a Mind-numbing Middle
Revisado: 07-27-19
The narrator was quite good. Unfortunately, the book was not. The best thing I can say is that the beginning and end were okay. However, the middle was so predictable and so tedious that I wanted to fast forward through it — only I didn’t because I also wanted to hear how many times the author would find a hackneyed way to have the two principals almost get together. My best guess is that the author had a minimum word count requirement— kind of like the 500 or 1000 word essays we had to write in school but a much higher number. For what it’s worth, my opinion is that a good editor could have made this a much better book simply by cutting a pretty good-sized chunk out of the middle.

Issues with the performance
Revisado: 04-01-19
I can’t fairly rate this book for content because I could not get through it due to the performance. I had to run it at one and a quarter speed to even be able to listen and then I still had to quit. Maybe no one else would find the reader that difficult to listen to, but for me They are most monotone and delivery and unusual accent made the book impossible to finish.
