In this engaging and provocative new book, beloved actor, director, and social activist Justin Baldoni reflects on his own struggles with masculinity. Enough
Revisado: 06-03-23
As a man on his own healing journey I really appreciate the work Justin is doing. I personally get more out of the podcast than I did this book, but I’m glad this book brought me there. I think if I was earlier in my journey I would have gotten more out of this book. It’s so hard to write a book about this topic, so respect to you Justin.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Loved is. Came across is after hearing the author on Rogan and so worth my credit. I loved how he tells this story through a first person exploration. Made it entertaining and easy to consume while learning a ton. Well done!

Historia
In 1979, a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're back and fighting the War on Terror.

I’m a Ronson fan and wanted to love this book as much as Them. But the dialogue in audio format was tough. Too many “he said” “I said”. Made the listen a bit painful. Good enough book id say go read it.

Historia
Shaka Senghor was raised in a middle-class neighborhood on Detroit’s east side during the height of the 1980s crack epidemic. An honor roll student and a natural leader, he dreamed of becoming a doctor—but at age eleven, his parents’ marriage began to unravel, and beatings from his mother worsened, which sent him on a downward spiral. He ran away from home, turned to drug dealing to survive, and ended up in prison for murder at the age of nineteen, full of anger and despair.

Great memoir. I heard the author’s interview on the Man Enough podcast and I’m glad it led me to this book. Redemptive, insightful and thought provoking.

Historia
The Motorcycle Diaries is Che Guevara's diary of his journey to discover the continent of Latin America while still a medical student, setting out in 1952 on a vintage Norton motorcycle together with his friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist. It captures, arguably as much as any book ever written, the exuberance and joy of one person's youthful belief in the possibilities of humankind tending toward justice, peace, and happiness.

Am I a commie if I admit that out of all the classic road trip literature this is better than On the Road or Travels w Charlie? Put the controversy aside and just take in what is a great travelogue. Well-written, often times funny and does what you want from a travelogue: takes you somewhere different and gives you something to think about. Great book.

Historia
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

My favorite audible of 2022
Revisado: 06-03-23
What a great memoir. Porter took me there: to his life, childhood, career and all the challenges he has faced. Not to mention weaving in the pandemic and his own mental health. I really loved how he rotates these timelines. To think Billy is so talented as a singer, performer, actor and writer. Not to mention his narration. He went beyond reading. This book didn’t have voice- it had personality! While the uphill battle he faced is painful, to see how far his career has gone was truly inspiring. His writing was so well done I found myself able to relate my own life struggles. Thank you Billy for yet another wonderful piece of art. Straight white dude from Texas here proclaiming this to be my favorite audiobook of 2022.

Historia
Them began as a book about different kinds of extremists, but after Jon had got to know some of them - Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen - he found that they had one oddly similar belief: that a tiny, shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, Jon sets out, with the help of the extremists, to locate that room. The journey is as creepy as it is comic, and along the way Jon is chased by men in dark glasses, unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp, and more.

Man is this a great listen. Entertaining, interesting and thought provoking. It is disturbing how much more applicable a book like this is today vs when it was published over 20 years ago. A true tip of the hat to Ronson for creating something that is funny, disturbing and filled with insight.

When Forrest Fenn was given a fatal cancer diagnosis, he came up with a bold plan: He would hide a chest full of jewels and gold in the wilderness, and publish a poem that would serve as a map leading to the treasure's secret location. But he didn't die, and after hiding the treasure in 2010, Fenn instead presided over a decade-long gold rush that saw many thousands of treasure hunters scrambling across the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of his fortune.

Enjoyed learning about the characters and Finn. But can’t say I was crazy about the book as a whole. Felt more like it was for fellow treasure enthusiasts and could have had a better structure for the masses. Enjoyed the background on the other treasure hunts referenced too.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Great then Good
Revisado: 06-03-23
Loved the first half of this book, focused on his childhood, love story and rise to stardom. It felt like the music really drove the narrative and how the story was told through each song. The second half wasn’t as captivating for me, namely bc it felt too political and name-droppy. But I know to expect that with books like this. Overall was well worth the credit and my time. Production team took this one to the next level. Would recommend, especially the first half.

Jon Ronson has quickly become one of our favorite journalists. This short piece was worth the credit. Interesting, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Close to my other favorite Ronson pieces: Them and Butterfly Effect.
